Description |
A military Nursing Sister's uniform that was worn during the First World War. The uniform consists of a cape (.01), blouse (.02), a skirt (.03), collars (.04 -.06), cuffs (.07 -09), an apron (.010), military badges (.011-.013) and a collar stud (.014). The blue wool winter cape (.01) is made with wool on the exterior and has red cotton fabric lining in the interior. It has a wool and cotton fastening belt in the interior of the cape used to fasten the cape around the body. The belt has two composite, four sew-thru button fasteners. On the top is lose blue/black thread where a metal chain and two button hooks would have been attached to the wool fabric. The cape has four button holes but not buttons. It would have had four brass buttons, which have the logo for the Royal Medical Army Corps. Sewn on the cape the four brass buttons (1977.7.1.04-.07). The blue cotton blouse (.02) is double-breasted. It has long sleeves with metal snap fasteners. There are two rows of brass buttons. The blouse has shoulder straps where two brass and red enameled shoulder pips are attached above a "Canada" should title badge (horizontally pinned on either shoulder seam. The blouse has a matching full-length skirt (.03) with hook and eye fasteners on the front waistline. It has one front facing pocket with two flaps on either side fastened by metal snaps. The uniform has three white collars (.04 -.06). (.04) is a white linen collar with a white button and metal backing. (.05) starched cotton collar with brass button stud fastener at the neckline. (.06) Linen collar with stamp of the maker's mark in the inside of the collar. It reads "Robinsons Cleaver Lt./ Makers/ Belfast and London". The uniform has three white cuffs (.07 -09). (.07) is white starched cotton collar with "A.E. Hindley" written in black ink in the inside of the cuff. It has a white button with a metal backing fastener. (.08) is white starched cotton collar with "A.E. Hindley" written in cursive writing in black ink in the inside of the cuff. It has a white button with a metal backing fastener. (.09) is white starched cotton collar. White linen full apron (.010) with button closure at the back waist which is missing and shoulder straps that tie in the back. There are two pockets in the front. The bib is gathered at the bottom. On the waistline in ink is printed "A.E. Hindley/ C.A.M.C." [Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps]. The brass metal military cap badge (.011) with a split pin with a matching collar stud (.014). Both show a laurel wreath surrounding a caduceus with a crown above "Canadian Medical Corps" in raised letters below. Two metal Canadian military shoulder flashes or badges (.012 and .013). One has a split pin. They are dated to 1914-1918. The shape of the shoulder flash has "Canada" in cut-out letters. The brass split pin is hooked onto the metal loops on the shoulder badge. |

The uniform belonged to Nursing Sister Alice Eva Hindley (December 2, 1883-1968) of Rockwood. She served in the First World War in the Canadian Expeditionary Force as a Nursing Sister in the Canadian Army Medical Corp. enlisting on 19, May 1916. She was stationed in England in 1916 and France in 1917. She was awarded the Royal Red Cross and returned home to Canada on February 19, 1919. In the 1930s, Alice, her cousin, George Cecil Thomas (1889-1952) and his wife, Kathleen Adams Thomas (1888-1962), went to Vimy Ridge for the dedication of the memorial in 1936. They were passengers of the Cunard White Star "Antonia" in July 1936. |
