Vera Myers, work and family photographs, Fergus, ca. 1930-1982. Vera Bernice Cudney was born at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Fergus, Ontario, on the 16th of November, 1917. Her parents Elizabeth (Bessie) Morrison Ballingall and David Wilfred Cudney were married on the 20th of September 1916. Vera had one brother, Herbert (Bert) Wilfred Cudney, who was born on the 18th of March 1920. Bert served as a Flying Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII. Bert lost his life on the 22nd September 1943, when his plane was shot down over Germany. Vera attended public school and high school in Fergus, and was Valedictorian of her graduating class. Following high school, Vera worked for a short time in Galt, Ontario, and then at Beatty Brothers in Fergus, where she met Lyle Rodney-John Myers (b. 1916) from Leamington. Lyle was working in the Shipping Department at that time. In 1940, Lyle obtained his degree in Agricultural Engineering at the Ontario Agricultural College, Guelph, Ontario. Vera and Lyle married in Fergus on the 9th May of 1942. Lyle served overseas from 1943 - 1945 in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII. Vera continued to work at Beatty Brothers during the war. Vera and Lyle had two children: Jayson (b. 1951) and Lisa (b. 1962). In April 1948, Vera commenced work in the office of the Wellington County Clerk-Treasurer as a temporary assistant to Clerk John Beattie. She was appointed Deputy Clerk-Treasurer in April 1952. In 1963, she was appointed Clerk-Treasurer, and in 1979 her title became Clerk-Treasurer Administrator. She was enthusiastically involved in the inauguration of Wellington Place, the Wellington County Museum and Archives, and Wellington Terrace; the renovation of the County Court Building; the construction of the Elora Gorge Bridge, and several other major projects at the County. Upon her retirement in December 1982, Vera was the last person to hold the joint positions of Clerk and Treasurer at the County of Wellington. Vera served as a Past President of the Fergus Business and Professional Women's Club and was a member of the Soroptimist Club of Guelph. Her volunteer activities included work for the Cancer Society, the United Way, Meals-on-Wheels, and the MacDonald Stewart Art Centre. In the 1990's, Vera was asked by Fergus Legion Branch 275 to represent the Sisters of the Veterans at Remembrance Day ceremonies in Fergus. Vera passed away in 1998 and was buried in Belsyde Cemetery in Fergus. She predeceased her husband Lyle as he was laid to rest alongside in her 2002.
