Slides made by Gordon Couling between 1969-1977 of the old Sleeman Brewery and nearby Sleeman family mansion on Waterloo Avenue in Guelph, Ontario. He also used the slides to make copies of earlier images. By the late 20th century the Sleeman family mansion had become a hotel [ca.1960s] and by the 1990s had become "The Manor", a site of adult entertainment. SLIDES 9093 - 9106: - Images of the old brewery buildings as they appeared on 20 and 21 November 1969, as well as copies made in the 1970s of older images of the brewery from 1894 and ca.1908. [slide 9093 = NA 3451]. Written on slides, "Old Sleeman Brewery", and on card accompanying slides "Sleeman Brewery". NA 3447 listed as being of one of slides 9094 through 9105. SLIDES 9107 - 9108: - The Sleeman family and their first house (ca. 1880), and with their later stone house (built 1891); images copied by Gordon Couling in the 1970s. SLIDES 9109 - 9127: - Sleeman family house on Waterloo Avenue as it appeared between 1892-1900, and 1957-1973. When built in 1891 it was the most expensive stone house in Guelph. The image in slide 9124 was copied from the photograph published in The Globe [Toronto] newspaper of 06 August 1892. SLIDES 9128 - 9129: - Carved stone garden urn with swan motif [at Doon Heritage Crossroads?], as it appeared on 02 July 1972. Written on slides, "Doon Urn from Sleeman House"; on card, "Garden Urns". |
