1837-1948 |
Description |
The files contain correspondence to and from John Bayne Maclean (1862-1950), publisher and founder of Maclean Publishing Company, Toronto, later Maclean-Hunter. The letters deal particularly with the history of Crieff and its church and founding families, and more generally with the history of Puslinch Township and the Presbyterian church there. Maclean was born at Crieff, West Puslinch, the elder son of The Rev. Andrew and Catharine Maclean. Graduating from Royal Military College, Kingston in 1882, Maclean took a company of the 30th Wellington Rifles to camp at London, later serving with the Mt. Forest and Fergus Companies; he is often addressed as "Colonel Maclean". In 1887 he established the first specialised business newspaper in Canada - Canadian Grocer - the beginnings of the Maclean Publishing Company, later Maclean-Hunter. Maclean's mother died in 1916 and was buried at Crieff; visiting there several years later, Maclean undertook to put the church surroundings in order. The work, by Olmsted Brothers, was completed with a formal dedication took place 10 Sept. 1924. In recognition of his work, the community presented Maclean with the Manse (in which he was born), and again he undertook restoration, and the expansion of the properties with landscaping plans by Gordon Culham, a former member of Olmsted Bros; reforestation began. Most of the correspondence lies between 1930 and 1945. It includes black and white, and colour photographs and newspaper clippings. There is extensive correspondence with John W. Gilchrist, who until his death in 1942 was involved with Maclean's "museum", which closed shortly after. NOTE: The initials JBM indicate John Bayne Maclean, though the exact address may vary. The spelling of Maclean may also appear as Mclean, MacLean; an effort has been made to reflect the spelling used. For convenience, the letters have been divided chronologically into files: - File 1: 1837-1856; includes finding aid for all letters at front - File 2: 1907-1929 - File 3: 1930-1935 - File 4: 1936-1939 - File 5: 1940-1950 - File 6: 1951-1989 The listing below follows the order (where known) of: DATE TO FROM CONTENTS 1837 05 24 typescript, 4 pages, "Session Records / Puslinch, 1837, Duff's Church" 1851 typescript, photocopy, "Subscribers to Presbyterian Church, Front Lot 15, 1st Concession, Puslinch Township.
