- ph 1629: Photograph, a portrait of Alexander Westervelt (1873-1936), ca. 1935. Westervelt served as General Manager of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. He is related to the Westervelt family of Mount Forest. A plaque erected in his honour at Exhibition Place in Toronto reads, "In honoured memory of Alexander Pattulo Westervelt, Born Dec 3rd 1873 -- Died July 28th 1936, Manager of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair 1922-1936. He served Canadian agriculture in its highest branches with zeal and enthusiasm, contributed to its prosperity, and by able administration, was instrumental in placing the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in high rank among agricultural exhibitions on this continent. This tablet was unveiled November 20th 1956 By his Excellency the Governor General of Canada, The Right Honourable Lord Tweedsmuir, G.C.M.G., C.H. in the presence of former associates and friends. Erected by the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair Association". From a group of photographs once in the possession of the Yeomans family of Mount Forest, Ontario. |
