Description |
Copy print of the Glenlamond sawmill owned by W.C. Reid and operated by William Gerrie, ca. 1885. It was located on the Grand River below the area flooded for Shand Dam, and specialized in producing railway ties. A copy of the same photograph was published in the Fergus News-Record of 06 January 1944, with the following information: "Several weeks ago, the News-Record published the above picture of the old Glenlamond sawmill, a mile or so east of Fergus in West Garafraxa Township. The picture was taken about 1885. It was sent from Vancouver by Forbes A. Clark, 66,777 Burrard Street, whose brother is in the picture. It has aroused a good deal of interest among older readers. The editor of Canada Lumberman also borrowed the picture to use in that magazine. William Gow, who lives not far downstream from the old mill, has a copy of the same picture. He gives the names of nearly all those in the picture, some of them being the same as the list supplied by Mr. Clark, and others being rather different. He can give the names of most of the teamsters, none of whom Mr. Clark knew. Here is Mr. Gow's List: Left to right, the line of men below the dam: John Demmans, John Gerrie Sr. (who later rang the town bell in St. Andrew's church); Johnnie McLean (lime burner); Hugh Milloy (or McLoy, as Mr. Clark gave it); a boy whose name is not known; Adam Halliday, two men Mr. Gow does not known; James Clark; Allan McQuarrie leaning on car; three Gerrie boys sitting on car of ties; Tom Mullen and Joe Lillie. Mr. Gow does not know the man standing in the doorway at the side of the mill. Next to him are W.C. Reid, owner of the mill, and William Gerrie, the operator. The man at the upper end of the mill, with a pole in his hand, is Jim Gerrie, only worker in the mill who is still alive, so far as Mr. Gow knows. Driver of the team in the lower right is Billy Hodge. Behind him with the empty wagon is Jim Gow, who died not long ago. In the second row of teams, left to right: Billings; a man standing on the ties, probably McBride; Tom Wilson with a team; the next one unknown; then Harry Hamilton, and another unknown. The boy on Steele's delivery rig is Herb Harwood (who is still alive). We had said most of the railway ties were probably tamarack. Mr. Gow says that for every one tamarack, there would be three hemlock and five cedar". |
