Glare of flash reflecting off of glass. Text on back of medal: Presented to N.S. A. Cook by the citizens of Mt. Forest for gallant services, Great War 1914-1918. Alice Cook, daughter of J.J. and Annie Cook (nee Stovel), was born in Mount Forest 29 Dec. 1893. She became a nurse and was a graduate of the Hospital for Sick Children, in Toronto. She died on 31 Dec. 1918, aged 25, from influenza and pneumonia, while serving on the staff of the Hospital for Invalid Soldiers on Isabella Street in Toronto, for which patrioic service she had volunteered. She was the only female from Wellington County to die as a result of war service in the Great War of 1914-1918. Nursing Sister Cook has three sisters and one brother: Joy (Mrs. N.S. McKechnie of Coburg); Effie (Mrs. H.L. Emmett of Fonthill; Agnes (Mrs. G.E. Cockburn of Mount Forest); and Roy Cook of Toronto. The text above from a portrait-memorial panel. |
