The following additional information has been provided by the donor [filed with photo]: This picture was included in our family information, so that is why it was not with Greenock School information [donated earlier]. Wayne Aitken's maternal grandmother is in the picture. Alice Leslie - at end of row in the row marked as 'third' row, from the back - far right. Alice was the only living child of Joel Williams and Mary Leslie - (Willie and Emma died as infants). Maplewood Farm - Lot 5, Cone 1E Erin James and Lydia Leslie - settled in 1832. Joel and Mary Leslie - married in 1877 Alice Elizabeth Leslie - born Dec 18, 1878 In 1889 in this picture - Alice was 11 years old, but still very tiny for her age. "Little Princess" Alice went on to marry Edward Pearen on Dec 29, 1899, with a honeymoon to Niagara Falls at the turn of the century. Their children : Elva M J Pearen Beatrice (Ross) Allan Evelyn (Calvin) Aitken - Nancy ( Bill Leithead); James (Lynn); Janet (Bruce Huff); Calvin Wayne ( Margaret); Keith ( Margaret), who still operates Maplewood Farm. So many names in this class photo are families mentioned in the Greenock history, Literary Society and Crewson's Corners history. - Taylor - Negro family lived at Lot 1, Con.1 in 1868 - Moore - Lot 4, Con.7 (from Ireland in 1837) - Cripps - Lot 3, Con.7 1861 - Crewson's - 1825, owned Lot 1 E, Con.1 - 200 acres - Duff - Lot 8, Con.1, 1880 - McKeown - Lot 6, Con.3 - Currie - Lot 5, Con.3 W 1856 There were very many Currie children - and one name in the class list is mentioned twice. Tena Currie - the second one could be Annie Currie. There are many Leslie's mentioned - James and Lydia (above) owned Lot 5 and 6 Con.1 E, and about 850 acres . They had nine children. Their one son, Joel Williams Leslie as above was the father of Miss Alice Leslie, living on Lot 5, Maplewood Farm. Another son, George Leslie married Amanda Stafford and they lived on the farm on Lot 6. Their children shown in this class picture were Bertha; Henry; Harvey and Joel B. Joel B. Leslie married Ina Seymour and the family of their son Gordon still live on the property of Lot 6, Con.1 E. The class listing should really say Joel B Leslie, so as to not confuse it with Joel W. Leslie - Alice's father!! (When I sent a jpg. of this picture around to our family - it did confuse some at the time... wondering how Joel could be younger in the picture than his daughter Alice - until we figured out that it was Joel B. !) Gordon (Annie) Leslie's family still living on Lot 6, Con.1 E are: Robert (Margeurite) Leslie Leah (Paul) Youngblut Sharon (Craig) Porterfield Calvin Wayne (Margaret) Aitken, also living at Lot 6, Con.1 E now as well. Added 30 May 2019: - file 1: "Greenock School and Bell Cairn. " 3-page history by Margaret Aitken, tells the story of Greenock School, S.S. No.8, Erin Township. The school, originally a log structure called Leslie School, was financed in 1851. In 1875 land was purchased on the Joel Leslie farm, and a new structure erected, with a bell. Following a fire in 1966, a cairn was built as a memorial to the school. [MU 1474] - ph 54189: Digital colour image. Neighbours clearing the site for the memorial cairn, many of them still living a stone's throw from the property, 1966. [Stored STACKS and Archives EBook] |
