Research re. Wellington County Solicitor's building in Guelph, Ontario, 2006. |
Date |
2006 |
Description |
Research undertaken by Elysia DeLaurentis re. the history of the Wellington County Solicitor's building at 15 Douglas Street [Lot 17 the Prior's Block], Guelph and the solicitors and tenants who have worked there over the years. Research was done to prepare exhibit panels which were displayed in the building on Saturday 22 April 2006 when it was opened to the public for the Guelph Arts Council's "Doors Open Guelph" event. In December 1862 the County drew up a contract in which County Crown Attorney John Juchereau Kingsmill leased vacant Lot 17, the Prior's Block, (beginning January 1863) on condition that he build a structure to house the offices of the County Solicitors. In 1869 the County purchased the building and took over its maintenance. It remained the County Solicitor's building for over a hundred years, with tenants renting the upstairs offices until the 1970s (at which time the firm began using the entire building). At time of cataloguing the building was used as the offices of Wellington County Child Care Services. Research notes include hand-written and typed notes, copies of County minutes, newspaper articles, copies of photographs, etc. Included are colour photographs taken by DeLaurentis in February 2006, and during Doors Open Guelph that April. Also included are two CDs of images from the WCMA collection, and loaned from Hugh Guthrie and family of Guelph and from the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre.
