Description |
Fergus Agricultural Society records, 1896-2011. The Fergus Agricultural Society / Wellington County Fair dates from precedents to 1837. In his book "Fergus", A.E. Byerly reports that the first agricultural show north of Guelph was held in Fergus on January 13th of that year, under the direction of the Gore District Agricultural Society. In the parliamentary reports for Agricultural and Horticultural Societies, for the year 1871, the Directors of the Centre Wellington Agricultural Society presented their Fourth Annual Report. It appears to have been an amalgamation of the agricultural societies of Nichol (founded 1854) and Pilkington (or Pilkington and Elora). The Archives collection holds an 1877 prize tag from the Centre Wellington Agricultural Society (A2005.111) and a prize list (A1979.91.34) for Center Wellington Agricultural Society and Twp. of Nichol Agricultural Society for their Union Exhibition held in Fergus, 1899. Minutes for the Pilkington and Elora Agricultural Society, 1896-1907, are also in the Archives collection (A1982.70). The fall fair was known as the Centre Wellington Union Fair until the 1930s; it was then referred to as Wellington County Fair through the 1950s and 1960s, until it became Fergus Fall Fair starting in 1965. With the exception of the cookbook, published 2011, the materials listed below were found in the basements of various members, including John and Helen Broadfoot, Susan Harrop, Shelly Maitland and others.
