Velma Beaton was born Arretta Anne Velma Beaton, 3 Nov. 1903, the daughter of Thomas Gilbert Beaton (1874-1951) and his wife Mary Edith (nee MacEdward, 1876-1932). Velma died 8 Feb. 1988. Velma was the middle daughter, between Myrtle [Katie/Catharine Elisabeth Myrtle Beaton, Mrs. Herbert Elmer Zimmerman, Milton] (1900-1999) and Olive [Mary Olive Lillian Beaton, Mrs. George Rollins, Campbellville], (1908-1988). The family farmed at Lot 36, Front Con.10, Puslinch Twp., which Thomas had purchased in 1900. Velma attended Badenoch School, S.S. #9, Puslinch Twp. In 1929, she won a silver cup in the Music Section, Jr. Farmers Association. In 1934, as 1st Vice President, she was a founding member of the Badenoch Women's Institute and a lifelong member. She was President 1936-1937, played piano, and several times "favoured with a violin solo", offering 'Loch Lomond', 'Bonnie Dundee' or the 'Star Spangled Banner'. Mary Beaton died in 1932 and her husband Thomas in 1951. In 1953 Velma sold the 100 acre farm to Robert and Alice Hunter. In the Land Abstracts, Velma's first name is listed as "Areta" The diaries includes the comings and goings of the family, farm work and events on the farm, trips to neighbours and to town; newspaper announcements, weddings, obituaries, recipes; it is not clear who wrote the diaries in file 1A, 1B, 2A, 14. - file 1A: Mrs. Mary Beaton (nee MacEdward), 1 March 1930 - 17 June 1931.
