Black and white print. Portrait of a middle-aged man with moustache, goatee beard and spectacles, wearing a suit and tie. He is identified on back as, "James M. Shanly, Grand Est. Loyal Knight, Oakland 171". Written on front in pen, "Greetings from Cousin James". Photographer's stamp on front, "HARTSOOK PHOTO S.F.-L.A.". Note: San Francisco is home to Ophir No. 171, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. In existance from 1904 is Oakland Lodge 171 of the Benevolent and Protective Order fo the Elks. The reference above possibly could be to one of these groups. |
