  4. 1953.5.10 - Cutter, Tobacco

    Tobacco cutter mounted on a circular wooden base, to which an iron bracket is screwed. The blade and handle are attached to this bracket and can be moved up and down. There is a routered bowl beside the blade to catch the cut tobacco. Circa 1875.

    Lever-action tobacco cutter mounted on a circular wooden base with a routed edge. There is a circular "bowl" indentation carved out of the base to hold the cut tobacco. The cutting blade consists of an iron blade with a turned wooden handle and is attached to the base by a flat, rectangular piece of iron. The blade pivots up and down to cut the tobacco, and pivots across to sweep the cut leaves into the "bowl". Circa 1875.

    A fairly sophisticated marking gauge, as the pin is made of brass, overlaid by wood. The wood block is not square but flattened on two sides and rounded on two sides. There is an oval-shaped brass plate on the block which is chipped where the wood pin is inserted.

    An unusual clear glass lamp chimney which is round and bulbous at the bottom and narrows in the upper middle section, then flares again at the top with a scalloped upper edge. It is made of clear glass with horizontal frosted rings, including a Greek key design. The frosted rings and Greek key design appear to be acid eched on the surface of the glass.   16. 1953.5.25 - Sower, Grass Seed

    A metal wheel with perforated metal track. Two metal discs are joined by a strip of perforated metal to form a hollow wheel. An axel allows for turning and is affixed to the wheel by a U-shaped frame. The frame has a metal flange on top to hold the handle (missing). There is a hole and cover on one plate for filling with seed. It is dated circa 1880.

    Small, narrow-mouthed stoneware jug. Grey-beige in colour with a very glossy glaze. Straight sides join with a curving top which curves in to form the mouth. Small handle applied at the mouth.

    Plain grey salt-glazed batter jug. The sides curve convexly from the large opening on the top. It has a carrying handle of wire and wood attached by pottery loops. The pouring spout is cylindrical in shape. There is a finger grip at the back near the bottom.

  20. 1953.5.29.03 - Pencil Box, Pencil

    Wooden pencil box made of light brown wood with a lid that is square at one end and rounded at the other. The lid slides in a groove in the box. It is marked in inches from 0 to 7 5/8". The slate pencil is pointed at one end and broken at the other.
