Description |
Hand-beaded suede leather jacket dated circa 1980-1990. The jacket has long sleeves with a rectangular strip of beading and eight beaded tassels down each sleeve, and leather tie closures at the cuffs. The beading on the sleeves is a light blue rectangular strip with a line of red beads (two beads thick) as a border. In a line down the centre of the rectangle are eight geometric designs. The designs consist of a white cross at the centre, with blocks of red beading between each arm of the cross, and blocks of blue beading at the end of each arm. The tassels are attached along the beaded rectangle beside each cross design. The tassels are decorated with stripes of red and white beads. The jacket has five brown and beige buttons down the front. It has two front pockets, and two breast pockets with buttoned flaps. A double line of beading in alternating dark and light blue sections outlines the flaps of the breast pockets, opening of the hip pockets, collar, and placket. The jacket has a pocket inside the left breast with a button closure. The jacket has a copper-coloured lining. There is a leather hanging loop sewn inside the back of the neck. There are two vertical strips of beading down the back of the jacket. The beading on the strips is in a repeating pattern of red, white and dark blue triangles on a light blue field, with an alternating red and dark blue border. |

Provenance |
This jacket belonged to Lynn Main and Marla Alexander of Fergus. It was given to them in about 2006 by Rene Lefevre (1942-2014), who made and wore the jacket originally. Rene was born on 2 June 1942. He grew up near Timmins, Ontario as part of a large family. With a French Canadian mother and a French Algonquin father, his childhood was spent learning many culturally-inspired customs from his extended family including the pleasure of beading. Rene learned to bead and to tan leather from his grandmother. Rene moved to Southern Ontario in his twenties in the 1960s. He later moved to Wellington County from Toronto in the 1970s with his partner Mel Muir. They lived in West Garafraxa Township, Nichol Township and Elora. Rene passed away on 7 September 2014. |
