Floor model treadle sewing machine dated circa 1870. Wooden table top with a drop leaf extension on the left side. Decorative black cast iron metal legs and square foot pedal; cast in raised letters on pedal is "Fergus Mfg. Co.". Black metal sewing machine is inscribed: "Barclay". Includes bobbin winder. |

The sewing machine was built by the "Fergus Manufacturing Company" and was owned by the family of William Louttit Sr. He was born on January 20, 1821 in the Orkney Islands, Scotland and died 26 February 1893 when he was 72 years old from a hepatic abscess. He was a farmer and lived with his wife, Mary (born 5 May 1828 - died 21 August 1913) on Lot 14, Concession 5 in West Garafraxa Township. They had seven children (Margaret, Marian, Christina, Elizabeth, Alice, William Jr. and Annie J.) |
