Lantern, Candle Lantern, Barn |
Description |
Tall, square, metal candle lantern with clear glass panes on three sides. The fourth side consists of a sheet of metal which slides up and down to allow access to the candle. Bowed strips of metal placed in an "X" pattern protect the glass panes. One section of glass is broken. On the top is a piece of metal curved lengthways with a larger piece of metal overtop curved sideways (this protects the chimney access). Oval-shaped wire carrying handle soldered at top. Inside the lantern is a small candle. Remnants of gold painted finish on metal. |

Provenance |
This candle lantern was made after 1847 by the donor's grandfather, James Noble (1819-1889). All he had when he came to the Queen's Bush (Lot 17, Conc. 14 Maryborough Twp.) was "a lantern [954.89.7], axe and a bag of flour". According to the family, it (954.89.7) was "the first lantern on the 14th Concession of Maryborough Twp." James Noble improved on the design when he made this second candle lantern after emigrating to Maryborough in 1847 (954.89.8). These enclosed candle lanterns were often used in the barn so that the embers could not be blown out onto the straw and burn down the barn. |
