Provenance |
These items belonged to Fred Short of Metz, born 1899 and were used in the care of his stock. He loved horses and kept them right up until his accident. There was a small window on the northeast wall of the stable, high up, and he used the wide sill as a place to put such items while working with the animals. Fred was the son of William and Eve (Williams) Short of Metz. Fred married Martha Ellen Foster Short. Their only daughter, Eleanor, died as an infant in 1935. Fred's mother, Eve Williams Short, was the daughter of Robert and Mary Finlay Williams of West Garafraxa on the 5th Line near Belwood. Fred's father, William Short, was the son of Leonard and Maria Tilley Short of Pilkington Twp. Eve and William Short had the following children: Mary Alice and Amanda M., born 1881 and 1883, both died 1885 of diptheria; Robert A., born 1884; Jean D., born 1890; H. Victor, born 1892; W. Lorne, born 1894 and Fred R., born 1899. Fred's sister, Jennie (Jean D. Short) wore headcovers when she was a volunteer during WWII. She worked in an insurance office in Toronto and died in Toronto around 1975. In April 1986, Fred Short was at work in the barn caring for his stock. A cow went after him in the stable, knocking him down and causing internal injury. He was taken by ambulance from the barn to the hospital and never recovered enough to return home. By late summer, he had become a patient at the Arthur facility of Caressant Care. His farm machinery and the household goods were sold September 1, 1986 and his wife Martha Ellen "Nellie" Short (nee Foster) then joined him at the Centre. |
