Description |
Small handmade plaster box with a clear glass viewing window containing a finely woven sample of cloth and two small paper notes proclaiming the cloth to be Egyptian, dated 1493 B.C. One sample of cloth appears to have black pitch or tar on it. Handwritten in ink on one piece of paper: "At least 2500 yr old / probably 3500 / according to / L. Fayton" Handwritten in ink on second piece of paper: "3355 yr old / 1493 B.C. / time / Sothmus 3rd / of Egypt" Scratched into the bottom of the plaster box is "Welland / 1863" (or possibly "Wellane") |
