Provenance |
The quilt was made by the donor's grandmother, Leah (Groff) Grills (1851-1900) of Harriston, before 1900. 2,344 light and dark strips and 144 red hearths were arranged by the maker to create a Chevron or arrow pattern. The red square in the centre of each repeating motif represents the warmth and centrality of the kitchen hearth. The record 1976.23.3 may be the same quilt. It was catalogued incorrectly. 1881 Census - Harriston Household Gender Age Birthplace Thomas Grills M 38y England Leah Grills F 30y Ontario Sarah J Grills F 4y Ontario Alberta M Grills F 2y Ontario Thomas M Grills M 4m Ontario Matilda Meyers F 17y Ontario Thomas and Leah had ten children: • Arthur French Grills • Sarah Jane Grills b. 1877 • Johannah Alberta Grills • Alberta Maud Grills b. 1879 • May Grills • Thomas Wilfred Grills b. 1880 • Gabrella Mae Grills • Abner Grills • Margaret Edna Grills • Richard Franklin Grills |
