Description |
Steelyards, a balance beam type of scales made of metal. It is a long, square rod with a pear-shaped weight on one end and three hooks on the end that flattens into a pointed indicator. Of the three attached hooks one is the hook from which the steelyards hang, and the other two are the hooks from which the object to be weighed is hung. The pear-like weight is marked with a "3" near the top. This piece is cast and hangs from another metal piece that is flat when it rounds the square rod. This allows the weight to be positioned at different, notched increments along the rod. At this end of the rod is a flat disk that stops the weight from sliding off the end. All of the three hooks are able to pivot. The two hooks have been placed either side of the hook that the scale hangs by. The arrow-like end marks the weight by resting level at correct position. On the up and down side of the arrow shaft there is a cross-like decoration. The mark the proper hooks from which the scales should hang. Stamped into the arrow is "120 / T. Bourne? / Broadside". On the square rod are increments of "30 40 60 80 100". On another face of the rod are increments of "4-10 15 20 35 30". This gives the scale two different ranges of measure. |
