Belonged to Norman Wilfrid Darby Barber. Possibly from a VJ Day celebration. Norman enlisted in the RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force) on August 12, 1942 and took the oath of allegiance on September 7, 1942 at the #10 Recruiting Centre in Hamilton, Ontario. He was a clerk at the Bank of Montreal in Elora (1940 to 1942). He married Elva Noreen Macpherson September 3, 1949 at the Hespeler United Church. Elva worked at the Bank of Montreal in Hespeler. Norman Barber began his military training at WETP (Worker Education and Training Program) course at Westdale Technical School and received a Certificate in Radio Instruction upon its completion in March 1943. His radar training was provided from May to July 1943 at the RAF Station in Clinton, Ontario. He was posted, beginning in the summer of 1943, to the No. 8 Bomber Reconnaissance Squadron and served at a number of bases in British Columbia (including Sea Island, Port Hardy, Patricia Bay, Alliford Bay and Sandspit). He was in charge of a Radar Responder Beacon. Barber served from September 7, 1942 until October 30, 1945, when he was transferred to the Reserve, General Section, Class E. His rank at discharge was LAC (Leading Aircraftman). |
