Description |
A doll with a cotton body stuffed with sawdust, wooden arms and legs and waxed-over composition head. It is dated circa 1866. It has a blonde braided wig glued to its head. It has fixed glass eyes. It has yellow-painted hands and arms. It also has yellow and grey painted legs with black painted boots. The boots have an orange stripe around the tops. There is a red stripe around the grey leg to denote socks. The doll is wearing white cotton undergarments. They are machine-stitched, unhemmed with rust-coloured chain stitch embroidery on the front under the bodice. It has a red checked gingham cotton bodice and skirt. The bodice has a "brick-a-brack" collar edging. It has long sleeves. The skirt is bustled and pleated. The apron is machine and handsewn white cotton edged with bias binding and lace. There is a pocket in the centre of the apron with initials in cross-stitch "S.J.M.". There is a necklace made of a double strand of white, clear and smoke glass beads and two carved peachstone baskets and knot of blue ribbon. |

Provenance |
The gift form states that this doll was made in 1886. I believe this is a typing error and should read 1866. The doll was made in Ireland for Sarah Maxwell b.1865 in Maryborough Twp. It was sent from Ireland to Wellington County; the clothes were made by Maxwell women (greataunts?) who "sat up all night to make the doll clothes for the doll's trip to Canada". Sarah Maxwell was the daughter of Alex Maxwell (b.1821 Ireland) and Jane (McCutcheon) Maxwell (b.1825). The catalogue card seems to imply that it was Noble ancestors (the donor is Margaret Noble, Sarah's daughter, born 1882). However, if this doll was made for Sarah Maxwell, this would imply Maxwell relatives who sent the doll, not Sarah's future husband's relatives. The Maxwells farmed on the 14th Concession, Maryborough Twp. Sarah married Robert Noble of Maryborough February 9, 1881. Sarah died 1942. |
