Quilt blocks made by Anne Jane Lane Matheson (1854-1949) in the 1930's. Anne Jane Matheson was taught by her grandmothers, Martha Bidcomb Tarzwell from County Sommerset, England and Ann Jane Ballantyne Lane from Nace Ireland. Ann Jane Ballantyne (1803 - 1892), emigrated with her first husband George Lane from Ireland in 1837. George Lane died in the cholera epidemic of 1837 leaving Ann Jane with 3 children. She settled in Erin Twp. where she taught school on the 9th line near 17th sideroad. Among other subjects, she taught needlework. Anne Lane Matheson married John Matheson in 1874; he died in 1918. They raised ten children and three grandchildren. She is buried in Coninsby Cemetery, Erin Twp. In the 1930s, a Toronto newspaper published quilt patterns. She would handsew quilt blocks and then make quilts from the ones which appealed to her. McKendry, Pg. 100, #155 |
