Provenance |
"Shells from a collection formerly in an old Elora Museum on this street. Saved through the years by A. E. Martin and donated by him to this County Museum, August 20, 1954." Label on the box in which the collection was stored. It is believed now in 1984 that the label refers to the museum that was on Mill Street beginning in 1892. Newspaper records list the donation of a collection of shells on July 19, 1875. This donation was made to the natural history collection that had been started it is believed in 1873 by David Boyle and was by 1875 housed in the building adjacent to the then Elora Public School. This collection of natural history artifacts was moved to various locations including the museum on Mill St. in Elora in 1892. This collection of sea shells and the David Boyle collection of archaeological and fossil material seem at present to be all that remains from the earlier natural history museum in Elora. (E. Langlands, 1985 curator). "Seashells of the World" by R. Tucker Abbott, Golden Press N.Y. |
