Description |
Pieced quilt with white background and appliqued design of 'S' motifs (to represent the name Smellie) made from a pattern of fan-shaped Dresden Plate sections manipulated to create the 'S' motif. Dated 1877. The cotton prints that are pieced together in the Dresden pattern are mainly in colours of blue, brown, mauve and deep red. Some of the prints are worn but the quilt is in very good condition. |

The quilt was made by the donor's grandmother in 1877 as a wedding quilt. Charlotte Milne of Metz married Matthew Smellie of Fergus and Kitchener in 1877 at Metz, W. Garafraxa Twp. Matthew and donor's father, Russell Smellie, built houses in Fergus and Kitchener area. Their children were Agnes Harbottle, Lottie, Russell and Arnold. |
