Description |
Flat rectangular metal frame with a rectangular central opening. Three sides of the marker have a bent lip in order to slide over a corresponding plate or plaque (in cemetery). The marker would have been attached to a long metal stake that is driven into the ground. |
Provenance |
Found in the Wellington County House of Industry and Refuge Cemetery. Originally wooden crosses were driven into the ground to identify each burial site. Over the years these rotted and metal markers on stakes were ordered. These metal holders were inserted over the plaques. In the early 1950s, trees were planted at each site and the metal markers were gradually enveloped by the growing trees. Now only a few markers are visible, buried in the roots of the trees. We have found no corresponding list to these to identify the name of who is buried. The raised number on each plaque does not correspond to any record we've found. The plaque for this frame bears the number "1276798" or "1278798." Photographs were taken to identify at which plaque site this was found (lying on the ground) in the northeast section of the cemetery. |
