This wedding top hat was worn by George Broughton at his marriage to Mary Goodwin on March 17, 1857. According to English marriages online, they were married in Caistor, Lincolnshire after which they came to Canada where they made their permanent residence. According to the 1901 census, George and family first emigrated to Canada in 1844. He apparently returned to England and married Mary in 1857 before setting off together to Canada. Mary gave her emigration year in the census as 1858. The couple and their growing family are listed as living in Peel Township from the 1860s to 1881. By 1891 they were farming in Caledon Township and by 1901 had moved to a farm in Erin Township where they reamined until Goerge's death in 1903. After his death, Mary left the farm and lived in Erin Village. |
