Description |
Cabinet wall clock (.01) with removable pendulum (.02) and winding key (.03), 1906. Rectangular oak casing with hinged door at front; two square panes of glass in door, both are reverse painted in black and gold. Top pane frames the large circular white clock face with black Roman numerals; face is trimmed with brass; black metal minute and hour hands; winding shaft on face. Bottom pane reads "Regulator" and displays the pendulum. Pendulum consists of a brass plated metal disc mounted on a flat piece of varnished oak; adjustable timing screw at bottom. Top of case is decorated with a piece of pressed wood with a scalloped top; bottom is decorated with brackets and a pressed wood applique. Door is trimmed with a curved moulding pressed with a geometric pattern. Brass key has a short, four-sided shaft that is soldered to a rectangular length of brass with curved ends (this appears to have been a modification or a repair to an originally much smaller key). |

Provenance |
The clock belonged to the owners of Beatty Brothers Ltd. in Fergus and hung in their office. It is uncertain whether the clock was purchased by the original Beatty Brothers, George (1845-1921) and Matthew (1833 - 1884) or the second generation of brothers who ran the firm, William George Beatty (1877-1957) and Milton James Beatty (1879-1940). The younger brothers joined the leadership of the business in 1901. When the Beatty family sold the factory in 1961, the clock was given to Jean Marguerite Beatty Weafer (1911-1998) of Fergus. She liked having it because it reminded her of her father, William George Beatty. It was with her in her home in Kitchener. Jean moved from Fergus in 1961. It was given to her son, William George Beatty Weafer (1943-1997) in the 1980s and hung in his home in Guelph, until his wife died in 2010. It has since been in storage with a family friend in Guelph until it was donated to the museum in 2017. |
