Description |
An oil barn lantern manufactured by General Steel Wares (GSW) of Fergus. The lantern is made of sheet metal. There is a circular oil reservoir at the bottom; chimney at top, and it is connected with tubes at either side. Stamped on both sides of the top is the model name "Beacon". In raised letters on one side of the lamp is "Made in Canada". In raised letters on the base is "Guaranteed Wind Proof". On the side of the lantern is a knob to adjust the wick and flame. It is stamped "GSW" in raised letters. It is a plain clear glass lamp with flat wick. The lamp is protected by two intersecting metal wires that meet diagonally in the centre. It has a wire handle. |

The lantern was found in the donor's barn (dated circa 1880). The barn is located in Pilkington Township. The donor purchased the farm in 1973. It was formerly owned by Donald Cameron. The house on the property was built in 1865. |
