Hammock Cradle |
Description |
A baby's hammock consisting of a machine woven cotton body stretched between two U-shaped wooden frames. Ends and sides of hammock have an open weave, patterned in pink, blue and yellow stripes of varying widths (all colours prominantly faded). Cotton cords at each end are gathered and joined to steel hooks for hanging. A manufacturer's tag attached at one end reads: "Palmer's / Arawana Hammock / No. 001". Printed on the rear of the tag are patent dates ranging from January 1883 to April 5, 1904. |

Used by infant Harold Charlesworth, born 1904, in Morpeth, Ontario, to parents Ellie (Nellie) Claxton (1873-1944) and Dr. Joseph Charlesworth (1868-1953). Joseph was a graduate from the University of Toronto's Medical School in 1898. He practised in Morpeth, Blyth and Belwood before moving to Harriston in 1916. Ellie and Joseph had two children, Harold and Josie (Josephine) Charlesworth. Harold is the brother of the donor. |
