Wellington County postcards, ca. 1900-1970. Twenty postcards depicting scenes around Wellington County. File 1: Postcard of Arthur, Ontario, 1908. - ph 48399: Two men and two women standing outside the Commercial Hotel in Arthur. It is a three-storey brick building with small balcony over main entrance and lettering "Commercial Hotel" on third floor wall. Woman at right is leaning on her umbrella, like a cane. Three "x" marks have been made around the top central, open window. Sent to Miss M. Dilloway of Guildford, Surrey, England from her sister, with note that "I am working here, were 7am sleeping" and have been very busy. The "x" marks might denote the sender's room where (s)he was sleeping. Postmarked Arthur, 14 August 1908. Publisher unidentified. File 2: Postcard of Belwood, Ontario, 1913. - ph 48400: Illustration at right of a man and woman snuggling in the headlights of an automobile in which another couple are also snuggling. Text imprinted on left, "Lost on the roads to Belwood, wont be home till morning." Sent to Miss Flora Till of RR4 Belwood from Annie Masson, postmarked Oakville, October or November 1913. Masson notes that she is attending high school at Oakville, will be home for Christmas, and that there are "dandy sports down here." Published by "TB" with note "Auto Pennant Series. - 16 Des". File 3: Postcard of Clifford, Ontario, ca. 1915. - ph 48401: View looking down Elora Street, Clifford, with commercial buildings on both sides, ca. 1915. Pedestrians on sidewalk at right. Telephone or hydro poles at left. Text imprinted at base of image, "Main St. Clifford, Ont.". Sent to Mr. W. W. Brown of Caledonia, Ontario, from N.M. Parker in Clifford, re. prefering more time to look around. Stamp removed prior to donation, and with it most of the postmark. Publisher unidentified. File 4: Postcard of Dorking, Ontario, 1910. - ph 48402: Illustration of pink flowers with embossed text "Greetings from Dorking Canada", with the word "Dorking" in raised velvetine lettering on the illustration of a banner. Heraldic crest of Canada in a round cartouche at upper right. Sent to Master Dell Micholson of Bridgen, Ontario from "Hartley" in Dorking, postmarked Newton and Bridgden, June 1910. Note re. receiving card, studying in Senior Fourth class, and the addressee moving west. Publisher's mark with intertwined initials "JBC" [not necessarily in that order]. File 5: Postcards of Drayton, Ontario, ca. 1910. - ph 48403: Stereographic image of the view looking across a field towards buildings identified as the Brick Yards of Drayton, with farm buildings in background, ca. 1910. Imprinted text lower right, "Brick Yds / Drayton". Note on reverse to "Merle" re. thinking he had been forgotten. File 6: Postcards of Elora, Ontario, 1910-1913. - ph 48405: View from the base of the Elora Gorge, looking along the Grand River or Irvine River in winter, 1910. Cliffs flank the river, and sheets of ice hug the riverbanks. Imprinted at lower left, "River from Below / Elora Ont". Sent to Miss Hilda Allen of Collingwood, Ontario, from her cousin, 09 July 1910. Note re. being in Elora and not reaching home till Tuesday. Postmarked Elora, 09 July 1910. Unused; publisher unidentified except "Made in Canada". - ph 48498: Small photograph of the Elora Gorge identified as "The Cove, Elora, Ont. Canada" adhered to the top of a postcard, within a yellow border, 1913. Below it is printed a yellow and purple banner with black word "ELORA". Text above and below banner reads, "You Ought to be With Me in ELORA We'd Have a Joy Ride". Sent to Miss Clara Philp of Drayton, Ontario, from "O.P" re. having a nice time in Elora and Guelph. Postmarked Elora, 18 Nov. 1913. File 7: Postcards of Erin, Ontario, 1909-1910. - ph 48408: Stereoscopic view of Main Street, Erin Village, 1909. It shows buildings and hydro or telephone poles along both sides of a heavily rutted dirt street. Text at lower right, "Main St. Erin". Sent to Albert Talbot of Ellastone, Staffordshire, England, from "your Louis", 24 July 1909. Note re. enjoying Erin, "it is a bit country here", the addressee's travels, and whether he'd like to come to Erin. - ph 48409: Tinted image of view over water looking towards wooden buildigns and a small wooden bridge, ca. 1910. Text at upper left, "Stanley Park, showing Boathouse and Bridge, Erin, Ont." Unused. Published by Stedman Brothers Limited of Brantford and Winnipeg, but printed in Germany. Inscribed in pencil, "E Wellington / $4.00". File 9: Postcard of Hillsburgh, Ontario, 1910. - ph 48411: Three quarter view of Hillsburgh Baptist Church, a one and a half-storey brick building with Gothic style upper windows, 1910. Leafy maple tree out front. Sent to Mrs. J. J. Still of Eglinton, Ontario, from her niece Nora, re. E.J. having a good time, chickens, going to Will Young's. File 10: Postcard of Kenilworth, Ontario, 1910. - ph 48412: Nine men posed standing in the rubble after the gristmill steam boiler explosion at Kenilworth in May 1910. Road, house, and barn in distance. Inscribed or imprinted across centre of image, "After Explosion at Kenilworth", with some letters inverted. Unused. Publisher unidentified. File 11: Postcards of Palmerston, Ontario, ca. 1910-1970. - ph 48413: Brick building with smokestack, cupola and tower, beside large water tower, ca. 1910. Text imprinted at base of image, "Electric Light and Water Works, Palmerston, Ont., Canada" and number "601,306". Ink smears across image. Published by The Valentine & Sons Publishing Company Limited, and printed in Great Britain. Inscribed on reverse, "This high tank is what is termed a Stand pipe & the water is pumped up into this & then from there it goes to different parts of town & there are no high hill so the water could to its own level that is the reason of stand pipe. Along side of this is a tower that is a bell tower & gives alarm in case of fire. Next is a low building the entrance you see open is the entrance for the fire engine & hose reel. At the other end is the dynamos & pumps which is electricity & pumping water.
