Ritchie and Milne family photographs, ca. 1860-1980. The following photographs have been kept in their original order and have been grouped into Series and Subseries accordingly. The photographs had not been organized by date; this was determined at the time the record was processed. A number of the photographs have been identified and labeled in blue pen on their reverse by Lawrence Harold Ritchie one of the family descendants. The major family names listed below are Milne, McCartney, Ritchie, Bell, Groves, McLelland, Campbell, Harbottle, Smellie, Gemmell, and Fairbairn. General background information for each family has been provided for each major family grouping. All photographs are located in the STACKS unless otherwise noted. Series 1: Ritchie, Groves, Bell, Milne, Fairbairn, Cope, McLelland, and Howatt, family photographs, ca. 1860-1962. Descendants of David James Ritchie (1820-1905). David was married three times, first to Elizabeth Stewart (1826-1868); second to Mary Ann Saunderson (1826-1874); and lastly to Elizabeth Trouten McConnell (1835-1911). David James Ritchie and Elizabeth Stewart had nine children together: Mary Ann Ritchie (1951-1907) who married William John Groves; Samuel Ritchie (1855-1914); Thomas Ritchie (1857-1862); David Richie (1858-1862); Isaac Ritchie (1859-1938); Elizabeth Ritchie (1860-1862); David John Ritchie (1862-1951) who was married to Mary Bell (1858-1941); George Ritchie (1864-1933); Joseph Ritchie (1867-1931) and Elizabeth Ritchie (1868-1950). David and his second wife, Mary Ann Saunderson, had no children. David James Ritchie and his third wife, Elizabeth Trouten McConnell, had four children: Thomas James Ritchie (1875-1956); Ellen Susannah Ritchie (1876-1936) who married Frederick Albert McLelland; Robert Edward Ritchie (1878-1929); and Agnes Jane Ritchie (1879-1938) who married William John Lands. Sub-series 1: David James Ritchie, family photographs, ca. 1860- 1884. - ph 55785: A black and white portrait photograph of Elizabeth Stewart (1826-1868) who was the first wife of David James Ritchie, ca. 1860. Elizabeth is sitting with her hands crossed in her lap. She has a high-collared dress on with lace on the top of the collar. Her dress has a fringe along the top. - ph 55786: A black and white photograph of David James Ritchie with his third wife Elizabeth Trouten McConnell, ca. 1884. David and Elizabeth are both sitting in chairs at a photography studio. Their poses seem rather relaxed. The photograph on the reverse is listed as W. F. Johnson of Fergus. - ph 55787: A black and white portrait photograph of George Ritchie (1864-1933), ca. 1884. George is sitting in a chair at a photograph studio. He has one arm up on a table and his other arm is resting in his lap. In blue pen on the back of the photograph it identifies him as "george Ritchie". - ph 55788: A black and white photograph of Thomas James Ritchie and his brother Robert Edward Ritchie, ca. ca. 1887. In blue pen on the back of the photograph it lists the boys as "David Ritchie" and "Thomas Ritchie", but they were born over 13 years apart so it is most plausible that this is the Thomas and Robert, sons of David James Ritchie and his third wife Elizabeth Trouten McConnell. Sub-series 2: David James Ritchie, family photographs, ca. 1860- 1884.Mary Anne Ritchie and William John Groves, family photographs, ca.1895-1945. Descendants of William John Groves (1844-1937) and Mary Ann Ritchie (1851-1907). Mary Ann was the daughter of David James Ritchie and Elizabeth Stewart. William and Mary Ann had eight children: Elizabeth Groves (1871-1967) who married William Campbell; Abraham Groves (1873-) who married Nettie unknown last name; David Groves (1876-1958); John Isaac Groves (1879-) who married Menitta Mcdonald; William Groves (1882-) who married Hannah Lavina Collingridge; Margaret Mabel Groves (1885-) who married Gustav Minard; Mary Alice Groves (1887-); and Laura Groves (1891-). The family lived and farmed in West Garafraxa, but by 1882, the family had moved to Brandon, Manitoba. Elizabeth Groves and William Campbell (1862-1943) were married on the 1st of October 1889 and had four children: Lawrence (Lorne) Richard Campbell (1890-1982) married Anna Margaret King in 1918; Edith May Campbell (1891-1997) married William James Crosbie in 1915; William Earl Campbell (1893-1949); and John (Jack) Norman Campbell (b. 1896). - ph 55789: A black and white photograph of the homestead of William John Groves and Mary Ann Ritchie in Brandon, Manitoba, ca. 1895. The only identified figure is Mary Ann Ritchie, who is the standing in the centre on the porch. To Mary's left is possibly one of her daughters. The Groves' house, barn, woodpile, pigs, chickens, windmill, and a horse and buggy are all visible in this photograph. - ph 55790: A black and white photograph of Mable Groves (left), Alice Groves (middle), and Laura Groves (right), ca. 1900. Each girl is wearing a high-collared dress. The two eldest girls have their hair pulled back where Laura, the youngest, has her hair crimped and free flowing. - ph 55791: A black and white portrait photograph of Ethel Fairbairn (1892-1925) and Edith May Campbell, ca. 1900. Ethel is the daughter of Elizabeth Ritchie and William Fairbairn, Elizabeth is sisters with Edith's grandmother Mary Ann Ritchie who is married to William Groves. - ph 55792: A black and white family portrait photograph of William Campbell and family, ca. 1903. Back (l-r): William Campbell, Elizabeth Groves, and Lawrence (Lorne) Campbell. Front (l-r): John (Jack) Campbell, William Earl Campbell, and Edith May Campbell. The photographer is listed on the bottom right hand corner of the image as W. A. Martel and Son of Brandon, Manitoba. - ph 55793: A black and white portrait photograph of David Groves and an unidentified female toddler sitting on his lap, ca. 1905. David is dressed in a suit and tie and the little girl is wearing a dress with ruffles. The photographer is listed on the bottom right hand corner of the image as James Walker of Fergus, Ontario. - ph 55794: A black and white portrait photograph of Laura Groves, standing, and Edith Campbell, sitting, ca. 1906. Laura is the aunt of Edith, and her mother is Edith's grandmother Mary Ann Ritchie; Laura was also born the same year as Edith in 1891. The photographer is listed on the bottom right hand corner of the image as Buyauts Studio of Brandon, Manitoba. - ph 55795: A black and white portrait of Ethel Fairbairn, ca. 1918. Ethel is wearing a high shirt with a ruffled collared, a skirt that comes in at the waist, and her hair is up in a bun. In cursive on the back of the photograph it reads "To Auntie Mary / Whishing you / a Merry Xmas". Aunt Mary refers to Mary Ann Ritchie (nee Bell), wife of David John Ritchie. - ph 55796: A black and white photograph of a family related to the Campbell family, ca. 1910. The back of the photograph suggests that it is William Campbell and his family, but it is not. It could possibly be a family of a brother or sister of William Campbell or Elizabeth Groves. - ph 55797: A black and white portrait style photograph of Elizabeth Campbell (nee Groves), ca. 1945. The photographers name is listed on the right hand corner on the image; it reads "B. A. Nicholson / Fergus, Ont.". Sub-series 3: David John Ritchie and Mary Bell, family photographs, ca. 1892-1952. David John Ritchie (1862-1951) was the son of David James Ritchie and Elizabeth Stewart. Mary Bell (1858-1941) was the daughter of James Bell and Martha Ritchie. David and Mary were first cousins. David and Mary were married on the 10th of March 1887. They had six children: William A. Ritchie (1888-1964); Lawrence Harold Ritchie (b. 1889); Allen Roy Ritchie (1891-1958); John Truman Ritchie (1892-1962); Elwood (Fox) Ritchie (1895-1963); and Alice E. Ritchie (1897-1905). - ph 55798: A black and white studio portrait photograph of William A. Ritchie, left, and Lawrence Harold Ritchie as young children, right ca. 1892. Mary is wearing a dress and a light coloured pinafore; she is holding a bucket from presumably feeding the chickens, which are in the right bottom corner of the photograph. In the back left of the photograph there is a wooden barn and fence, and to the right there is a piece of farm equipment. - ph 55803: A black and white copy print of David John Ritchie and his wife Mary Bell, ca. 1935. The photograph is just the busts of David and Mary. Mary has her hair up in a bun and is wearing a collared dress; and David has white hair and a moustache and he is wearing a suit and tie. - ph 55804: A black and white group photograph of Allen Roy Ritchie and his wife Mary Edith Louttit, David John Ritchie and his wife Mary Bell, Dorothy[?] McLelland (either Mrs. Walter Shaw or Mrs. Vince Mountford), and her mother Mrs. Fred McLelland, and a young girl in the front is unidentified, ca. 1935. The identification was sourced from the back of the photograph. - ph 55805: A black and white photograph of (l-r) David John Ritchie, John (Jack) Alexander Ritchie, Lawrence (Harry) Harold Ritchie, and John Ritchie, ca. 1945. David John Ritchie is the father of Lawrence (Harry) Harold Ritchie, and Lawrence is the father of John (Jack) Alexander Ritchie (1915-1987), and John (the little boy in the photograph) is the son of Albert M. Ritchie. He was raised, front a young age, by Harry and Mary. - ph 55806: A black and white photograph of Thomas James Ritchie (1875-1956), the son of David James Ritchie and his third wife, Elizabeth Trouten McConnell, and David John Ritchie, ca. 1945. Photograph seems to have been taken at a family reunion or party. - ph 55807: A black and white photograph of Allen Roy Ritchie and his wife Mary Edith Louttit (1892-1979), ca. 1945. Allen Roy is the son of David John Ritchie and Mary Bell. Photograph seems to have been taken at a family reunion or party. - ph 55808: A black and white photograph of John Truman Ritchie and his wife Mary Sanhuk (b. 1900), ca. 1945. Photograph seems to have been taken at a family reunion or party. - ph 55809: A black and white photograph of Thomas Ritchie and Clara Ritchie (nee Nash) (b. 1890) who is his mother, ca. 1950. Clara was the wife of William A. Ritchie who was the son of David John Ritchie and Mary Bell. - ph 55810: A black and white photograph of Harry, Lizzie Campbell, Mary, Mary, Mrs. Bill Groves and George Groves, 1952. The names were copied from the back of the photograph. Sub-series 4: Lawrence Harold Ritchie and Mary Helen Milne, family photographs, 1912-1962. Lawrence (Harry) Harold Ritchie (1889-1968) was the son of David John Ritchie (1862-1951) and Mary Bell (1858-1941). Mary Helen Milne was the daughter of John Milne (1861-1950) and Margaret McCartney (1867-1943). Lawrence and Mary were married in East Garafraxa on the 20th of November 1912. They farmed in East Garafraxa Township and, in 1946, they moved to Arthur district. Following their retirement from farm life, they moved to Arthur Village. They had five children together: Margaret A. Ritchie (1913-1913); John A. Ritchie (1915-1987); Helen Mary Ritchie (1917-1993); Albert Milne Ritchie (1919-1995); and Harold Allison Ritchie (1923-2008). - ph 55811: A black and white photograph of Lawrence (Harry) Harold Ritchie and Mary Helen Milne on their wedding day, 20 November 1912. Margaret Milne (nee McCartney) the mother of Mary Helen Ritchie (nee Milne), who is the mother of Albert Ritchie, and his son John Ritchie. Harold is wearing a hat and has glasses on; he has his arms crossed and is facing sideways to the camera. Behind him, a number of shelves are visible as well as a calendar hung on the wall, but it is too out of focus to read. This photograph was taken as the Supertest Service Station on the corner of highway 6 and highway 9 in Arthur, Ontario. - ph 55823: A black and white photograph Lawrence (Harry) Harold Ritchie and Mary Helen Ritchie (nee Mine) on their 50th wedding anniversary, November 1962. They are sitting on a couch surrounded by bouquets of flowers. Also see file 1, item 8 for more information. Sub-series 5: Elizabeth Ritchie and William John Fairbairn, family photographs, 1892-1915. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Ritchie (1868-1950) was the daughter of David James Ritchie and Elizabeth Stewart. Elizabeth married William John Fairbairn (1869-1934) in West Garafraxa Township on the 2nd of December 1891. They had five children together: Ethel (1892-1925); Lloyd Bruce (1894-1947); Earl Ritchie (1896-1997); Stanley (1898-1972); and Leola (1901-1996). They moved from Ontario to Carnduff, Saskatchewan around 1900 and then to Alberta in 1915 after William sold his business in Carnduff. - ph 55824: A black and white studio portrait of William Fairbairn and his wife Elizabeth, 1892. William is sitting in a chair to the left and his wife is standing to the right beside him. Elizabeth is wearing a long dress with an overcoat; she also has a pocket watch affixed to the front of her dress. The photographer has been listed on the bottom of the photograph as Charles Burgess of Fergus, Ontario. - ph 55825: A black and white studio portrait of Ethel Fairbairn (standing) and her younger brother Lloyd Bruce Fairbairn, ca. 1895. Ethel is wearing a long dress with lace along the top, and a belt with a bow on it. She has short curly hair. Lloyd is sitting in an ornate wicker chair wearing a long striped outfit with matching jacket. Lloyd is a baby and Ethel seems to be at a toddler age. The photographer has been listed on the bottom of the photograph as A. J. Miller of Fergus, Ontario. - ph 55826: A black and white studio portrait of Ethel Fairbairn, ca. 1897. Ethel is wearing is dress and has her right hand up on a chair. She is wearing a dress, bows in her hair, socks, and dark shoes. Ethel seems to be around five or six years of age. The photographer has been listed on the bottom of the photograph as James Walker of Fergus, Ontario. - ph 55827: A black and white studio portrait of the family of William Fairbairn, ca. 1910. Standing (l-r): Ethel Fairbairn, Stanley Fairbairn, Leola Fairbairn, and Earl Ritchie. Sitting (l-r): Elizabeth Fairbairn, Lloyd Bruce Fairbairn, and William Fairbairn. The men are wears suits and ties, while the women are wearing dresses. Elizabeth has a high-collared dress; and Leola has a bow in her hair. In cursive on the back of the photograph it reads: " From Lizzie and Willie / To Johnny and Mary". Johnny and Mary refer to Elizabeth's brother David John Ritchie and his wife Mary who reside in Ontario. - ph 55828: A black and white postcard with a photograph of the Fairbairn homestead in Carnduff, Saskatchewan, ca. 1915. On the front of the postcard is a photograph of a house with a barn visible on the right. There are four people standing on the front porch of the house. The reverse of the postcard identifies the people on the porch as "Leola, myself [Elizabeth], Ethel and a little girl friend". The postcard also notes "Will sold his business Dec 26 so I guess we will be leaving Carnduff soon". It is addressed "To Johnny with Compliments of the season / Lizzie". There is no postage or postal stamps on the card so it is assumed that this letter with sent in a larger envelope. Johnny refers to Elizabeth's brother David John Ritchie of Ontario. Sub-series 6: George Ritchie and Fanny Ann Cope, family photographs, ca. 1915. George Ritchie (1864-1933) was the son of David James Ritchie and Elizabeth Stewart. George married Fanny Ann Cope (1864-1947) in Fergus, Ontario on February 18, 1885. They had ten children: Harriet Jane (1885-1963); Elizabeth Anne (1887-1976); Margaret Pricilla (1889-1892); Frances (Fanny) (1892-1981); David A. (1894-1966); Arnold T. (1896-1980); Mabel (1898-1901); Herbert Louis (1900-1968); Tressa May (1903-1978); and Robert Garfield (1905-1968). - ph 55829: A black and white studio portrait photograph of Fanny Ann Ritchie (nee Cope), ca. 1915. Fanny is wearing a buttoned up pea coat, large scarf with pompoms, and a hat with ribbons and a large feather. Written on the back of the photograph in blue pen is reads "Fanana Ritchie / Fanny Ritchie wife of George Ritchie mother of Garfield, Harriett, Arnold, Herb, Tress, and Ernie?" The photographer is listed on the bottom as Caleb Hamner of Arthur, Ontario. Sub-series 7: Ellen Susannah Ritchie and Fred McLelland, family photographs, ca. 1960. Ellen Susannah Ritchie (1876-1936) was the daughter of David James Ritchie and his third wife Elizabeth Trouten McConnell. Ellen married Frederick Albert McLelland (1874-1953) in West Garafraxa Township on the 19th of December 1900. Ellen and Frederick had nine children together: Lloyd Edward (1903-1976); Frederick Elmer (1905-1928); Norman Ross (1907-1990); Gladys Rebecca Elizabeth (1908-1977) who married Walter Dowling Shaw; Ethel Susanna (1910-1985); Clifford Stanley (1912-1966); Thomas Harold (1914-1932); Ernest Stanfield (1916-2006); and Agnes Evelyn (1919-1993). - ph 55830: A black and white group photograph of the McLelland family, ca. 1960. On the back the family member has been identified as: "Watt Shaw [Walter Dowling Shaw] and his wife Gladys [Gladys McLelland], + Lev brother, Ernie McLelland and wife, and W + G's two daughters". A note in black pen on the reverse notes that "McLellands are children of Ellen Ritchie and Fred McLelland". Sub-series 8: Isaac Ritchie and Sarah Priscilla Howatt, family photographs, ca. 1960. Isaac Ritchie (1859-1938) was the son of David James Ritchie and Elizabeth Stewart. Isaac married Sarah Priscilla Howatt on the 23rd of December 1886 in Fergus, Ontario. They had twelve children together: William T.; David John (1887-1965); Mary E. (1890-1979); Ernest (1891-1937); Isaac John (1893-1917); Laurenia (Laura) (1895-1988); Wilfred Logan (1897-1992); Robert Bruce (1899-1964); Sarah Jane (1901-1986); John Stewart (1903-1965); Clarence Ambrose (1904-1968); and Leonard Delmore (1908-1974). - ph 55831: A black and white photograph of brothers Clarence Ambrose Ritchie (left) and Wilfred Logan Ritchie (right) with an unidentified young boy, ca. 1960. Both men are wearing ties and button up shirts; they are sitting on the grass facing each other while the young boy sits on the grass at Clarence's feet. Sub-series 9: Unidentified photographs of individuals possibly related to the Ritchie family, ca. 1885-1930. - ph 55832: A black and white studio photograph of eight unidentified women, ca. 1885. The women are arranged in two rows of four; the back row is standing and the front row is sitting on a short sofa like bench. Each women is wearing a dress with a high collar and some sort of lacy ruffle around the top of the collar or on the front of their dress. These women may be related to the Ritchie family. The back of the photograph lists the photographer as W. F. Johnson of Fergus Ont. There is a piece of tape covering the photograph on both the front and the back where a bend has occurred. - ph 55833: A black and white studio portrait photograph of a women sitting in a ornate chair, ca. 1890. In blue pen on the back of the photograph the women has been identified as "Minnie Ewards"; no link was made between this women and the Ritchie family. Minnie seems to be wearing a very light coloured dress. Her collar, belt, cheeks, and lips have been coloured in with pink ink. - ph 55834: A black and white photograph of three young looking girls standing on a log in a field, ca. 1930. Standing behind the log on the right is a dog, and the girl to the far left is not wearing shoes while the other two girls are. On the back of the photograph, the girls have been identified as (l-r): Mary Ritchie, Ida Ritchie, and Madaline Ritchie. No connection was made between the Ritchie family already listed in this record and this photograph of the three girls. - ph 55835: A black and white photograph of six children standing outside, ca. 1930. In blue pen on the back of the photograph the children have been identified as: "Gorrie Ritchies / Bill, Madeline, Mary, Edith, Ida, and Tom" below in black pen is says "missing Alice". Possibility related to the Ritchie family previously listed in this record. Series 2: Bell/Ritchie family photographs, ca. 1880-1940. Descendants of James Bell (1817-1899) and Martha Ritchie (1823-1898) who emigrated from Ireland to Ontario ca. 1855. The couple had four children: James R. Bell (1851-1928) who married Barbara Finlay; Mary Bell (1858-1941) who married David John Ritchie; Eliza Jane Bell (1863-1944); and Thomas Bell (1854-1936). - ph 55836: A sepia tone studio portrait photograph of James Bell (1817-1899), husband of Martha Ritchie, ca. 1880. The photographer is labeled on the bottom left hand corner as C. Hammer of Arthur Ontario. In cursive on the back of the photograph: "James Bell grandfather / h.o. Martha Ritchie / f.o. Mary bell w.f. David John Ritchie / buried at Mount Carmel [cemetery]". - ph 55837: A sepia tone photograph of the daughters of James Bell and Martha Ritchie: Eliza Jane Bell, standing, and Mary Bell, sitting, ca. 1880. Both women are wearing long dressed with button up jackets and each have a frilly collar. - ph 55838: A sepia tone studio portrait photograph of James R. Bell and his family, ca.1885.
