Views of Fergus, Upper Canada, 1837. Black and white photographs by Pringle and Booth of Toronto, ca. 1950, of historic views of Fergus, Ontario, as it appeared ca. 1837. Photographs have been adhered to grey cardboard mount, and the reverse of each is stamped by photographers, Pringle and Booth of Toronto. Printed image: 15.8 x 25 cm; Cardboard mount: 24 x 33.6 cm. Copied from lithographs published by Forrester & Nichol of Edinburgh, Scotland, 1837. - ph 50436: Photograph, ca. 1950, of a lithograph of a drawing by Canadian artist, Janet Dingwall Fordyce (1819-1873), drawn ca. 1835. Inscribed in ink beneath photograph, "Fergus, U.C. 1835". It is a landscape depicting the fledgling village of Fergus, Ontario, as seen from the southeast. St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church with steeple visible atop hill at right. Tree stumps in foreground, and forested area in background. The Grand River is not shown. Inscribed on reverse, "Fergus U.C. 1835 / From a drawing by Miss J.D. Fordyce. / Published by Forester & Nichol / Edinburgh." Janet Dingwall Fordyce (1819-1873) was born in Scotland and with her family moved to Upper Canada, settling at the new village of Fergus. In 1840 she married Alexander Drysdale of Garafraxa Township and they raised a family. They returned to Europe, to her husband's family home in Dunbar, Scotland, in 1864. - ph 50437: Photograph, ca. 1950, of a pen and ink drawing and ink wash or watercolour by either F. D. Fordyce or Miss Janet Dingwall Fordyce in 1837. It is a landscape showing the view looking north from A. D. Ferrier's Belsyde Farm on the south side of the Grand River, past a log house and stump-riddled field, towards the nearby village of Fergus. St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church with steeple visible atop hill at centre left. Inscribed in ink beneath photograph, "Fergus 1837." Inscribed on reverse in black ink, "Fergus Ont. 1837 / From 'Belsyde', Union St." |
