Stewart and Bolton family photographs and reminiscences, Guelph and Guelph Township, 1913-2011. James Alexander Stewart (09 September 1857-27 May 1918) married Lillie Milne (04 December 1855-26 March 1920) in 1885. They farmed at Menie, near Campbellford, Ontario, where they raised a large family. Their children were Minnie Blanche Stewart (23 June 1880-17 October 1952), Mabel Christine Stewart (23 June 1885 - 04 August 1977), William "Alex" Alexander Stewart (01 December 1886 - 02 June 1964), Donald Milne Stewart (01 July 1888 - 29 December 1914), Elizabeth Isabel Stewart (20 January 1890 - 9 August 1978), James Arthur Stewart (04 November 1892 - 20 September 1981), Thomas Walker Stewart (01 June 1894 - 14 May 1985), and Lillian Victoria Mae Stewart (24 May 1898 - 12 July 1980). The Stewart family moved to Lots 6-8, Concession 10, Division C, Guelph Township, in March 1914. Donald Stewart (1888-1914) had left the farm in Menie to go out west to study. While there, he caught tuberculosis from his roommate, and in 1914 moved home to the Guelph Township farm where he lived separate from the main house, in a small cottage tended by his sister Isabel Stewart (1890-1979). She was a nurse and had moved home to care for Donald until he died. When the father, James Stewart (1857-1918) passed away a few years later, he left the Guelph Township farm to his surviving sons. They didn't want to farm, however, so in 1921, the family sold the property and moved to the town of Guelph. Of the surviving Stewart children, Minnie Stewart (1880-1952) married Albert Dunk (27 December 1880-22 September 1943). Mabel Stewart (1885 -1977) was active in many organizations, some as a founding member, maintaining interests in the Women's Institute, Horticultural Society, Wellington County Historical Society, and the churches she attended. A single woman, she worked as a seamstress and later as the manager of Anderson's Gift and China Shop in Guelph. Alex Stewart (1886-1964) married Marion Thompson (1894-1986) in 1928 and they lived on Dufferin Street in Guelph. He worked for the Guelph Creamery as a driver, and was a keen gardener, fisherman, and woodcarver. Isabel Stewart (1890-1978) worked as a nurse, and married William Irvine (30 September 1886 - 19 January 1967). Arthur Stewart (1892-1981) married Olive Bardwell (1900-1967). Walker Stewart (1894-1985) married Meda Davies (22 May 1901 - 02 September 1994). Mae Stewart (1898-1980) studied nursing at the Guelph General Hospital School for Nurses. After graduating in 1924, she worked briefly at the Guelph General Hospital before a few months working as a private nurse in St. Jacobs for a Mennonite family there surnamed Martin. On 04 June 1927, she married Howard Ewart Bolton (29 May 1898 - 23 October 1980). They had met at a barn dance years earlier. He was a former neighbour, his parents' farm being at Lots 9-10, Concessions 6-7, Division C, Guelph Township. Mae ceased her work as a nurse upon marriage. Howard Bolton (1898-1980) served overseas during the First World War after enlisting with the 153rd Wellington Battalion in 1915. He was later transferred to the 4th Reserve Battalion and then to the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion. The family knew that he'd served as a runner/signaler during the war but he didn't like to talk about his wartime experiences. After the First World War, Howard ran a farm engine repair shop called "City Battery Service" and later built a new shop on Woolwich Street called "Guelph Auto Electric." The shop was in a building that ran from Woolwich Street through to Cardigan Street where there was a rear entrance. In the 1930s, Mae and Howard had two children, Doris and Helen. Howard served during the Second World War, training soldiers in British Columbia. He was an avid hunter and a member of the Fergus Hunt Club. File 1: Photographs, ca. 1913-1967 & 2010.
