Greeting card, unused, 1972; brown ink on buff-coloured paper, approx. 11 x 14 cm. The front features a printed reproduction of a pen and ink drawing by Canadian artist, Dorothy Clark McClure. It is the view looking south from Metcalfe Street towards stone and brick buildings along Mill Street West, Elora. Sign "Wellington County Museum" on building at left. Pedestrians, woman walking dog, person on bicycle, parked car, and Canada flag outside shows at left. Hydro pole and signs for the Elora Gorge Park and Metcalf Street visible at right. Imprinted signature and date at lower right, "Dorothy Clark McClure / 72". Title imprinted overtop lower portion of image, "Historic Lower Metcalf St. (circa 1860) Elora, Ontario." Imprinted on reverse, "This interesting block on Lower Metcalf Street in Elroa formed part of / the town's main business section in teh 1860's. At various times these / buildings house a general store, grocery, butcher shop, apothecary, / bank, book shop and post office. The Wellington County Museum is / located on the east end fo the block in a building erected by Thomas / Cannon [sic] in 1860, the father of local historican John Cannon [sic]. " ." and beneath that, "From an original drawing by Dorothy Clark McClure / The Red House Studio, Old Yonge St. N., Aurora, Ont." Later known as Mill Street West, these buildings were for many years described as being on the south side of Metcalfe Street, which formed an "L" running east-west, then north-south up what later continued to be called Metcalfe Street. |
