Description |
The Ernest Christopher Grimes fonds consists of diaries, letters and photographs created by and relating to Ernest Christopher Grimes. Ernest Christopher Grimes was born in London, England in 1893 and educated at The Friends' School, Saffron Waldon. He emigrated to Canada in 1913 and worked as a farm labourer in Saskatchewan. He joined the Canadian army in August of 1914. He served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in France from 1914-1917. He transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in April 1917 - Nov. 1918. Ernest finished his military service with the rank of Captain. His diaries describe the period 1914-1918; many contain detailed maps at the rear of each volume. Ernest Grimes married Ida Mary Powell in December 1918 and they returned to Canada in October 1919 to settle in Elora. They had three children: Kathleen (Cunningham) (1923-1982); Mary (Sword) (b.1931); and James (b.1932). Ernest operated Grimes Grocery, on the south-east corner of Colborne and Geddes Streets, Elora, from 1920 until the business failed ca.1932-1933. Ernest Grimes then worked as a grocery clerk at Burt's from 1933-1936. He was employed as an office clerk at Gypsum and Lime and Alabastine in Hespeler from 1937-1938, when he transferred to GLA Beachvlle as the office manager in 1938. In 1938 the family moved to Ingersoll. He retired from GLA (now Domtar) in 1963 and died in Ingersoll in 1971. SERIES 1: DIARIES, LETTERS, REMINISCENCES, 1914-1918.
