Many of these photographs and postcards were taken by or were in the possession of Hugh Templin, and were passed to his family after he passed away. Hugh Charles Templin was born 06 June 1896 in West Garafraxa Township to John Charles Templin (1869-1939) and his wife Annie Black (1871-1930). J.C. On Valentine's Day, 1916, while a student in Toronto, Hugh Templin enlisted with the 9 Div. Cyclists, and exactly a year later, enlisted with the Divisional Signal Co. of the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Forces. At the time of his second enlistment, he listed previous military experience including 5 weeks spent with the Div. Cyclists and six months spent with the C.O.T.C. A few years after the War, on 01 October 1921, Hugh married sweetheart Laura Jane Dow in York, Ontario. Laura had been born in Nichol Township on 10 Nov. 1894 to Robert Dow and Annie Forsyth. Together, Hugh and Laura raised a family and Hugh worked with his father at the Fergus News Record, eventually taking over from him. In about the 1930s, Templin Gardens was created by the Templins behind the Fergus News-Record office on St. Andrew Street, in the backyard backing onto the Grand River gorge.
