Description |
Buildings on the south side of lower Metcalf Street (later renamed Mill Street), Elora, Ontario, as they appeared in the spring of 1866; visible left to right are: stone Drill Shed on the south side of the river, brick building with sign on roof "Elora Medical Hall" and above doorway "J.W. Hele", brick building with sign on second floor "Elora Mill Office" and sign above door "Charles Whitlaw", brick building with sign on second storey, "Books Stationery / Fancy Articles Etc." and sign above door "R.J. Smith", and three-storey brick building; wagon parked beside frame portion of the Commercial Hotel visible in foreground at right; women and children visible in small doorway of medical hall and in its left upper window; men in uniform posed beneath J.W. Hele sign; other men (civilian) posed on wooden sidewalk; teelegraph poles and lines visible in front of brick buildings; written on reverse in pencil in late 20th-century handwriting, "Lower Metcalfe Street ( E. Mill St.), Elora late 1860's" and in a different hand, "April-May 1866". |
