Date |
1906 JAN 30 |
Description |
Construction of railway bridge in West Montrose, Ontario, seen from below, showing two piers, with derrick placing first large metal girder. This photo was published in the Elora Express of 07 February 1906. The article states, "...last week we mentioned that the first of the long steel girders of the Guelph & Goderich Railway bridge across the Grand River had been successfully placed in position. This was done shortly after eight o'clock on Tuesday morning, the 30th of January. The above cut is from a photograph which was taken by J.R. Connon, and represents the scene as the first great girder was being lowered to its place on the cement piers. About a hundred years back from the bridge, the derrick lifted the girder from the three flat cars on which it had been brought from Toronto. Then, the derrick with its load, was pushed by a locomotive forward to the bridge. This was done on the Monday afternoon, but owing to the high wind and the approaching darkness, the final effort was left until morning..." |
