Description |
Records of Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada Agenda on the Wellington County House of Industry to the Wellington County Museum and Archives, 1995. item 1: Photocopy of Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada Agenda Paper or report on the Former Wellington County House of Industry (now Wellington Place or the Wellington County Museum and Archives), Aboyne, Ontario, 1995-45, pages 199-247. This agenda paper resulted in the National Historic Site designation as the oldest surviving house of industry and refuge in Canada on 1 July 1998. item 2: Official designation letter from Executive Secretary Lawrence Friend to Ellen Langlands of the former Wellington County House of Industry, now the Wellington County Museum and Archives as a National Historic Site, 17 January 1995. Part of letter reads: "The Board felt that the Italianate former Wellington County House of Industry was architecturally of interest, particularly in the context of its associated landscape; however, additions, especially those of 1954 - 1955 and 1987 - 1988, had to some extent diminished its architectural value. Consequently, the Board was not prepared to recommend that the former Wellington County House of Industry is of national architectural significance. Then, following a brief discussion, the Board recommended that the former Wellington County House of Industry (now Wellington Place), in Aboyne, Ontario is of national historic significance and should be commemorated by means of a plaque. The Board recommended the designation of the former Wellington County House of Industry because, as the oldest identified example of a state-supported poorhouse or alms house, an important 19th - century social institution, it provides an excellent illustration of the origins of the important 20th - century theme, state involvement in social policy." |
