Letters, genealogy and photographs relating to the family of Berta Marguerite Smith. She was the daughter of John Robert Smith (1864-1942) and Ellen (nee Burt, 1867-1931). In 1889, John R. Smith purchased 43 acres SW 1/4 Lot 18, Con.6, Erin Twp., almost opposite Coningsby Post Office. The following year he married Ella Laura Burt and they raised four daughters Myrtle (1893-1957), Marguerite (1897-1991), Martha (1903-date) and Della (1905-1919). The girls attended Coningsby School, S.S. #5, at the corner of their property. In 1911 the family left the farm and John R. Smith appears on the census of that year as a labourer in Esquesing Twp., Halton County. Marguerite taught at Peacock School, Ballinafad, S.S. # 4, Erin Twp., from 1917 to 1922. The following year, in Erin Village, she married Peter Johnston Sinclair, a farmer; both list their religion as "Disciple". John R. Smith is later listed as a carpenter and contractor in Erin; and the name of P.J. Sinclair appears on a letterhead as a "dealer in fuel". - file 1: "The Genealogy of the Root Family" who came to Canada from Bucks County in Pennsylvania. Part I written by John H. Root, M.P.P.
