Grand Old Bridges: The Grand River Watershed Bridge Inventory, 2004 -- 0.02 cm |
Date |
2004 APR 06 |
Description |
Inventory report of heritage bridges prepared by Robinson Heritage Consultants for the Grand River Conservation Authority in 2004. In section 1.3 the scope of the inventory is thus described: "The Grand River Water Bridge Inventory has created selection criteria designed to capture bridges with significant heritage value that cross one of the five Heritage Rivers in the Grand River Watershed -- the Grand, Speed, Eramosa, Conestogo or Nith River. These bridges can carry roads, railways, or walking trails. Extant bridges are the priority but significant abandoned bridges, significant bridge remnants, and notable bridge structures lost since 1994 will also be documented whenever possible. When the consultant was aware of bridges with significant heritage value crossing other Grand River tributaries and waterways, these were documented and included when possible". The document offers a general list of some of the sources used and not used in the study. It includes some reproductions of photographs, and a chart listing bridge names, dates built, type of construction, materials used, span length, location and owner. The watercourse over which it's built is also listed, though for some rural bridges the name of the creek has not been included. Of the bridges discussed, Street is given if located in a town. For townships, no specific location is offered (eg. Lot and Concession). In describing bridge locations, in some instances old names for municipalities are given, and in others, the post-1999 amalgamation names are used. Bridge descriptions consist of one or two sentences about architectural elements, or about its history. It is not stated how the researcher determined dates of construction. |
