Description |
Dyce Saunders Scrapbook [part 1 of 2], containing photos and newspaper clippings of the following families: Saunders, Brehaut, Wilson, Shanly, Raikes, Willcocks, Webster, Glyn. There is an extended series of clippings relating to WW I and the death of Lt. Thomas B. Saunders at Ypres. A page-by-page listing of contents has been prepared: FIRST OF TWO RECORDS, PAGES 1-40 [This scrapbook is very fragile, with the backing sheets and some newspaper clippings deteriorating with each page-turn. The front is inscribed "Dyce W. Saunders, Christmas 1906." Saunders was born in 1862 and died in 1930, though the materials included extend to 1938. In preparing this listing, I have added numbers in pencil to the upper right of each page; references to the Brehaut family name appear here without the accent - though it occasionally appears in printed and handwritten versions as Bre'haut. There are frequent annotations in the hand of Guy Saunders, signed as G.L.S.: January 19, 1996, IKE] Cover - black leather, 14" high x 11" wide; embossed in gold type "Scrap Book" Inside front cover - handwritten in ink "Dyce W. Saunders, Christmas 1906" 1 8 small sepia prints of what appears to be the same woman; Invitation: "Miss Taylor requests the honour of your company at the marriage of her niece, Amy Brehaut to Mr. Dyce W. Saunders, at the Church of St. Matthias, Cote St. Antoine [Montreal?] on Thursday, September 12 at three o'clock 1889. Clairevue, Cote St. Antoine." 2 12 small black and white, and sepia photographic prints of children at various ages; some faded, some with identifying initials (T.B.S., I.B.S., G.W.S., D.C.S., I.W.S., S.B.B.S.). 3 11 black and white photographic prints, some fading, most with identifying initials or names (G.W.S., T.B.S., A.P.B.S., A.B.S., I.B.S.; Amy, Dyce, Isabel, Tom, Syddy). 4 10 black and white photographic prints, most with identifying initials or names (T.S.C.S. 1890, T.S.C.S 1915, Grace S. [a "strip" photograph from a machine?], A.J.P.S. 1892, Sydney B.B.S 1910). 5 One 6" x 8" black and white photographic print, dated in pencil and ink 1900. Studio portrait of five men, identified as George, Dyce, Stuart, Sydney, grandfather, SAUNDERS. Pencil note, signed G.L.S., "Panda copied #67923-2K." 6 On reverse of above photo, pencil note signed G.L.S., Apl. 1991: "From Dyce W. Saunders scrapbook. 4 sons with Thomas Willcocks Saunders. #5 [son?] Bernard Daly Saunders was living in Winnipeg at the time." 7 4 black and white photographic prints of Nettie Raikes [a woman with three children], Christine Raikes, Campbell Raikes, Elsie Raikes. 8 Small sepia print identified as "S.R.S./Stuart"; Invitation: "Dr. and Mrs. Macaulay request the honour of your presence at the marriage of their daughter Mary Agnes [Macaulay] to Mr. Stuart R. Saunders on Wednesday, December 29th, 1915...at St. George's Church and afterwards at Ardincaple." 9 Newspaper clippings: Guelph Herald, January 22, 1906. Announcement and 24 column-inch obituary of Margaret Webster, widow of the late James Webster, Registrar of the County of Wellington. She died at Guelph, January 20, 1906. Two studio portrait prints identified [in the hand of G.L.S.?] as "Mrs. James Webster (sr), dau of George Wilson, d. Guelph 20 Jan 1906 aged 82; Margaret Webster." 10 Newspaper clippings: Guelph Daily Herald, Wed June 4, 1919. Announcement and Obituary of Thomas W. Saunders, Police Magistrate of Guelph, died at Guelph June 3, 1919 [36 column-inches, total]. 11 Newspaper clippings: 18 death or funeral announcements (1912-1930) for members of the Saunders, Raikes, Grange, Young, Stewart, McCaul, and Shanly families. 12 Newspaper clippings: Black and white print and obituary of Thomas Patrick Webster (born Guelph, May 29, 1861), who died in Flint, Michigan. The Scotsman, April 2, 1907: Obituary for Mrs. Campbell Fraser, daughter of Dr. William Dyce; she died in Edinburgh [9 column-inches]. Obituary for [her husband] Dr. Alexander Campbell Fraser, born 1819, died in Edinburgh. 13 Newspaper clippings: "Veteran Magistrate Honored by Lawyers" - presentation to Mr. T.W. Saunders. "Presented By the Congregation of St. James" - presentation to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Saunders "on the occasion of their fiftieth wedding day, January 4, 1909." 14 Newspaper clippings: .....nto News, Jan 4, 1909 "Golden Wedding of Guelph's Magistrate" and Guelph Mercury, January 9, 1909 [30 column-inches, total]. Obituary, undated, of Thomas W. Saunders [12 column-inches]. 15 Newspaper clipping: front page headline, The Evening Telegram, Toronto, Friday June 13, 1930: "Dyce W. Saunders Dies in London Following Two Operations." 16 Invitation: "Mr. and Mrs. Dyce Saunders request the honour of your presence at the marriage of their daughter Grace Willcocks [Saunders] to Edward Morgan, M.D. on September 15, 1923, St. Thomas Church, Toronto, and afterwards at 72 Walmer Road. Two newspaper clippings reporting the wedding (10 column-inches, total). 17 Newspaper clippings: Announcement and report of the wedding in Toronto, June 12, 1926, of Isabel Brehaut Saunders, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dyce W. Saunders, to Dr. Norman Burke Taylor. Announcement of the death, October 5 1933, of Michael Dyce [Taylor], aged 5, son of Dr. and Mrs. Norman Taylor. 18 Newspaper clipping: Birth announcement, September 20, 1938 of a daughter "to the wife of Dyce Chalmers Saunders." 19 Black and white printed crest: in Latin "En vertu la force." printed underneath "Joshua Saunders." 20 blank. 21 Newspaper clippings: Announcement of the wedding, March 16 in Mexico, of George Wilson Saunders, son of Thomas W. Saunders, of Guelph, to Jane Matilda [Howard], eldest daughter of the late G.H. Howard. Announcement of the wedding April 20, 1927 in Toronto, of George Wilson Saunders (of Winnipeg, third son of the late Thomas Willcocks Saunders of Guelph) to Muriel [Powell], second daughter of the late J. Bleecker Powell of Guelph. Three black and white photographic prints, one with the initials G.W.W.S. Clipping, undated, from[?] Black & White (N.Y. Ed.): "The City of Death" which describes conditions in Vera Cruz, Mexico, noting Mr. Saunders as "one hero [at the Port Works] who nursed the living, buried the dead, kept the works alive, carried courage to those who sickened of fright, and went with cool eyes and a quiet voice through the Valley of the Shadow of Death...a Canadian, and the very name of Canada is becoming magical in its association with an heroic breed of men." 22 Newspaper clippings and one small sepia print: The Guelph Herald, February 12, 1906 and others unannotated, announcing the death, obituary and report of the funeral of Mrs. George Raikes (of Barrie), who was born Annette Grace Saunders, the only surviving daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.W. Saunders of Guelph [30 column-inches total]. 23 3 sepia prints identified as Adam Wilson (2) and Grace Wilson, nee Brand. Newspaper clippings announcing the death, on Nov. 4, 1892 in Tangiers (North Africa) of Adam Wilson, eldest son of the late George Wilson of Aberdeenshire, Scotland. An obituary [9 column-inches] reports the "Death of an Early Resident of Fergus." Adam Wilson came with his parents to Fergus in 1834; in 1865 married his cousin [Grace?], a daughter of the late James Brand of Surrey, England. 24 4 black and white photographic prints of women, identified as Henriette Saunders, Elinor Saunders (Mrs. Kennedy) [later Elinor Glyn], Julia Saunders, Frances Maria Saunders. 25 Invitation: "Lt. [see also pages 27, 104] 27 Sepia photographic print (7.5" high x 8.5" wide) of a man and woman with three children, identified as Elinor Glyn, [man - Clayton Glyn?], Juliette [Glyn], Margot [Glyn], Mrs. Kennedy. [see also pages 26, 104] 28 From The Tatler, No. 158, July 6, 1904: full page, portrait of Lady Duff Gordon, who is identified as the eldest daughter of the late Mr. Douglas Sutherland and the sister of [Elinor Glyn] Mrs. Clayton Glyn, the author of "The Visits of Elizabeth." 29 One black and white photographic print of a man, above a signature, Clayton L. Glyn; two magazine illustrations identified as Mrs. Clayton Glyn (photo. H. Walter Barnett) and Lucy Duff Gordon. 30 2 sepia photographic prints: Man and woman with three children (The ---- Studio, Toronto); portrait of man identified as Geo. Saunders [The photo is signed Notman; the man appears to be the same as in the photo described above]. 31 Newspaper clippings: Montreal Weekly Gazette, Feby. 20, 1880 "La Foi de Brehaut Vaut Mieux Qu'Argent." Obituary for William Henry Brehaut (born 1809). The article describes the Brehaut family departure, in 1783, from France (via the Island of Guernsey) to Quebec City and later Montreal; [14 column-inches]. Death notice for [month] 5, 1875 of Esther Eliza Taylor, wife of William H. Brehaut. "Demolition of Old Landmark Awakens Many Reminiscences" notes the demolition of the Brehaut home on Cote Ste-Antoine in the Montreal suburb of Westmount; includes family details. Willcocks and John Willcocks; one black and white (c.1992?, of what appears to be a painting), identified as Sir Richard Willcocks; black and white of two women identified as Great Grannie Saunders and Aunt Louisa Shanly.
