Illustrated history book exploring the lives of black settlers to the Queen's Bush, Peel Township, in the mid 19th century. Description on back cover reads, "The Black pioneers (1839-1865) who cleared the land and established the Queen's Bush Settlement in that section of unsurveyed land where presentday Waterloo and Wellington Counties meet, near Hawkesville, are the focus of this extensively researched book". Settlers tended to be escaped American slaves who found freedom in Canada. Includes biographical sketches of settlers (list of Black pioneer settlers known to have lived in the Queen's Bush between 1839 and 1865), endnotes, and index. |
