Duff's Presbyterian Church in Puslinch Township, stained glass window designs by Gordon Couling, ca. 1970-1980. It is a stone building that was constructed in 1854 across the road from the site of the former log church. The stone church building is located at 319 Brock Road South, just north of Highway 401. Gordon Couling (1913-1984) was a Guelph-based artist, art historian, and professor at the Ontario Agricultural College / University of Guelph. He served as Chair of the University's Fine Art Department, and had a keen interest in local history, arts, and architecture. [ MRA 6 ] File 2: Stained glass window designs for Duff's Presbyterian Church, ca. 1970. - Item 1: Design for a stained glass window with rounded arch at top, ca. 1970. It features a grid of diamonds, at the centre of which is a light pencil sketch of the figure of an angel with wings closed behind it, and hands clasped in front as if in prayer or holding an object. Brown watercolour paint over pencil drawing on white paper. Inscribed on reverse, "Duffs" and "Duff's". 126 x 91.5 cm. [ MRA 6 ] - Item 2: Design for a semi-circular glass window, as if to fit in the top of an arched window, ca. 1970. Drawn with pencil and retraced in brown watercolour wash and ink. Central medallion features chi rho motif over an eight-pointed star. Diamond pattern in background. On white paper with brown watercolour and blue ink. 114 x 92 cm. [ MRA 6 ] - item 3: Design for an semi-circular stained glass leaded window, as if designed for the top of an arch, ca. 1975. it is outlined in brown watercolour wash with sections coloured with pencil crayon. It is a symetrical design showing two scrolls, with note that they were to be hand painted. Scrolls read, "To the Glory of God / and in loving memory of / George Brown / 1905-1974". Inscribed on reverse, "Duff's Harbottle[?]". 111.5 x 55.50 cm. [ MRA 6 ] |
