Description |
The James L. Halley records include letters, invoices, receipts and promissory notes made payable to James L. Halley of Ponsonby, Pilkington Township, 1863-1868. Most of the receipts and notes have a rusted hole in the centre, likely made from having been impaled on a small spike. These documents were all found together in a house in Ponsonby which used to function as a general store. item 1: Receipt of payment from Jim L. Hally [sic] to James Marsie [or Massie] and J. Henry, "on a/ct", dated Guelph, 11 October 1863. item 2: Invoice for "goods per invoice" purched by Mr. Halley from George Jeffrey, "Importer of and Dealer in Millinery, Mantles and Fancy Dry Goods", dated Bradford House, Wyndham Street, Guelph, 29 November 1867. [Form printed by "Mercury Cheap Job Press"]. item 3: Request written by "Dinis Clifford" which implores, "Mr Haley [sic] please let Miss Dillan have ten dollars in part payment of her Sallary", dated Nichol, 21 December 1867. item 4: Receipt that Denis Clifford, Secretary, had received from Jas L Healley [sic], $48 "on a/c of Taxes collected by him for Trustees" of the Roman Catholic Separate School No.1, Nichol Township, dated Ponsonby, 31 December 1867. item 5: Request written by France[?] Dan[????], asking James Hally [sic] to "let father hav 1/2 lb Tea 3 pints whisky" which the author would pay for at harvest time, dated "Pilkington Agent -68". item 6: Request written by "B.A. de[?]" asking Mr. Hally [sic] to "pleese pai Mr Bernhart Schmuk the Som of feefty Tents on Targe to my A Count", dated "Guoelph [sic] the 15ten [month not given] 1868". item 7: Receipt of payment made by Jas L Hally [sic] by cheque and cash "on a/c of Sep School Nichol", to James Cummins, dated Ponsonby, "February 1768" [must mean 1868 as Ponsonby didn't exist in 1768]. item 8: Promisory note signed by James L. Halley promising to pay "Thomas Griffith & Co. at Royal Canadian Bank in Toronto" $156.79, dated Toronto, 24 February 1868. Marked "paid". item 9: Receipt of payment by Mr. J. Halley to James Cummins, "on account of the School morg", dated Pilkington, 26 March [18]68. item 10: Request made by Thomas McQuillan to Mr. haly [sic] to "pleas give the barer what she wants and send the bill of it and you wil ablig me", dated Pilkington, 09 May 1868. item 11: Letter from Jas L Halley to the freight agent, Guelph Station, Grand Trunk Raiway, requesting compensation for hoop skirts just received which had been damaged by water while in transit, dated Ponsonby, 17 June 1868. item 12: Listing of items bought by J.L. Halley on account from [paper torn] Kennedy, between 01 January and 15 July 1868. Items purchased include eggs, candles, oatmeal, marbles, oranges, olive oil, rope, spoons, wheelbarrow, and more. item 13: Invoice for bottles of whiskey purchased by James L. Halley of Ponsonby from David Allan, "miller, distiller, rectifier, etc." of Guelph Mills, dated 16 July 1868. Letterhead of Guelph Mills includes engraving of mill site. item 14: Invoice for bottles of whiskey purchased b James L. Halley Esq. from David Allan of Guelph Mills, dated 02 September 1868. item 15: Promisory note signed by James L. Halley promising to pay Thomas Griffith & Co. at Royal Canadian Bank in Toronto $124.78, dated Toronto, 01 October 1868. Marked "Paid". item 16: Invoice for cod fish and tobacco purchased by J.L.
