Palmerston cookbooks, 1973-1975, and childcare manual, ca. 1927. - item 1: Cookbook titled "Be Prepared" by the Palmerston Cub and Scout Ladies' Auxiliary, published in Palmerston, Ontario, March 1973. Inscribed at top of table of contents, "Elma Leyland" and stamped "Leyland's Marine & Sports" of Palmerston. The ladies auxiliary is described in the book as "an organization of mothers of Scouts and other ladies constituted under the authority of the Cub and Scout Group Committee for the purpose of assisting Scout groups and offering material, financial and moral support." The book includes recipes for breads, salads, main dishes, and desserts. Includes recipes submitted by: Bernice Arkell, Betty Audet, Pat Barry, Gladys Boertien, Dani Brown, Annie Dyksterhuise, Wilma Elliott, Shirley Freeland, Lois Gilliland, Enid Gray, Louise Haas, Corrie Hembly, Barb Hendrickson, Marie Hollingsworth, Joan Huisser, Doris Hunt, Wilma Hutson, Agnes Job, L. Inscribed on reverse back cover is recipe for bran muffins and notes about celery. Yellow paper softcover, illustrated. This book once belonged to Elma Leyland of Palmerston, who was involved with the group. - item 2: Cookbook titled "Palmerston Historical Sketch and Cook book", Centennial 1975 edition, published by Peace Chapter #52 Order of the Eastern Star, Palmerston, 1975. Editted by Bea Abbott. First five pages of book consist of a historical sketch of the town of Palmerston by R. W. McEachern. Book includes recipes for breads, casseroles and main dishes, salads, desserts, and miscellaneous. Includes loose page tucked inside with instructions for boiling tongue. Coil bound, white paper softcover with title and pentacle. Includes recipes submitted by A. Ashmore, Bea Abbott, Dani Brown, Marion Brown, Ruth Brown, Caroline Cameron, Faye Cronsberry, Agnes Forster, Bea Gadke, Kate Honeyford, Doris Hunt, Daisy Lawrence, Mae McNeill, Mary Morphy, Lawrence Morphy, Velma Palmer, Grace Rothwell, Zelma Smith, Marjorie Stevenson, Helen Veldhuis, J. Walker, and Audrey Wilson. This book once belonged to Elma Leyland of Palmerston, who was involved with the group. - item 3: Childcare manual titled "The Baby" issued by the Ontario Department of Health, undated [ca. 1927]. It offers information for expectant and new mothers about prenatal care, labour and childbirth, the importance of birth registration, and how to feed, bathe, clothe, and otherwise look after a newborn baby. Includes information about hygiene, immunization, and how to avoid common diseases. White paper softcover with crest of the Province of Ontario imprinted in black and orange. The donor notes that this book was given to Reta Horton at the Palmerston Hospital. She was born in 1927. The donor notes that the book, "originally had a card with the hospital's three digit phone number attached to it." |
