Greeting card, unused, 1972; brown ink on buff-coloured paper, approx. 11 x 14 cm. The front features a printed reproduction of a pen and ink drawing by Canadian artist, Dorothy Clark McClure. It is the view looking west across the Grand River from the Badley Bridge (Metcalfe Street Bridge) towards the rear of buildings on Mill Street West in Elora, Ontario. Victoria Street bridge and Elora Mill visible at left. Imprinted signature and date at lower right, "Dorothy Clark McClure / 1972". Title imprinted overtop lower portion of image, "Picturesque buildings on the Grand River, Elora, Ontario." Imprinted on reverse, "Before the turn of the century Elora almost rivalled Guelph as a / centre of commercial and agricultural activity in the region. Out- / standing regattas were held on the river running through the com- / munity lending credance to the town's description as the 'Venice of / Ontario'. Renewed interest in Elora is bringing about some welcome / restoration and buildings are beginning to show signs of their early / glory." and beneath that, "From an original drawing by Dorothy Clark McClure / The Red House Studio, Old Yonge St. N., Aurora, Ont." |
