Description |
Greeting cards, directories, and photographs, ca. 1915-1999. They were once in the possession of Katherine Peden (nee Ewing, 1913-2005) of Fergus, ca. 1915-1999. She grew up in Pilkington Township, married Alex Peden of West Garafraxa Townhship, and they lived on Hill Street in Fergus. File 1: First World War Christmas cards, ca. 1915-1918. [ MU 1299 ] - item 1: Christmas card inscribed from "Father & Mother", produced by G. Delgado Limited of London, England, ca. 1915. Cover with text "flags that fly in freedom's name" with printed then hand-painted grouping of flags of the United States of America, Russia, Great Britain, France, and Belgium. Bow of red, white, and blue ribbon at left side. - item 2: Christmas card inscribed from "grandpa & grandma", produced by G. Delgado Limited of London, England, ca. 1915. Illustration by English artist, Frank Jennens (1893-1957), with depiction of a young boy with monacle, partially dressed as a soldier, holding a staff with text beside him, "On leave". At bottom is text, "To wish you all Good Luck". Tied with khaki coloured thread. - item 3: War-themed Christmas card from "John E Carey, W.O." with poem about remembering absent friends, and note for "best wishes for a bright and peaceful future", Christmas 1918. cover features colour lithograph of Britania holding a trident and walking beside a male lion. Above her fly the Queen's flag, and beneath it, the Union flag. Behind her can be seen a soldier with rifle by a tank, a sailor with sword on shore by a ship, and an aeroplane which flies overhead. - item 4: Christmas card addressed to "dear Grace" from "Grandpa & Grandma", ca. 1915. Cover has colour illustration by Louis Wain of an orange cat dressed as Father Christmas [Santa Claus], with a sack of toys over his shoulder, approaching two kittens who jump up and down with excitement. Tied with red thread at left. File 2: St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Fergus, 1980-1999. [ MU 1299 ] - Item 1: Local history book, "St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Fergus 1834-1984" by the history book committee [William Black, Joan Booker, james Burnett, William Couling, Judith Fleischauer, Evelyn Lee, Brenda Lougheed, and Barbara McCallum], 1984; softcover, 44 pages, illustrated, no index. Cover is cobalt blue and features image of the top half of the church rendered in white. Tucked into front cover is page 11-12 of the Presbyterian Record (September 1999) with articles "Why I support independent schools" by Ron VanAuken, and "The Jealousy of Kings and Commoners" by Ted Siverns, with pen and ink notations. - Item 2: St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church directory of parishioners, 1980. Softcover, coil spine. Identified black and white photographs of church members grouped by family, and listing of names and addreses of each member or adult couple. Includes pen and ink notations. Typed notes relating to the history of the church have been taped to back inside cover. Minister is Rev. J. Murray G. Laurenson. - Item 3: St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church directory of parishioners, 1984. Softcover, coil spine. Identified black and white photographs of church members grouped by family, and "roster" of names and addreses of each member or adult couple. Includes pen and ink notations. Minister is Rev. Murray Laurenson. - Item 4: St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church directory of parishioners, 1994. Note on burgundy cover, "160 years of Service to God and Community 1834-1994". Softcover. Identified colour photographs of church members grouped by family, with listing of names and addreses of each member or adult couple. Includes pen and ink notations. Minister is Rev. J.M. Laurenson; Pastor is Jeff Roy. - Item 5: St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church directory of parishioners, 1999, titled "Fanning the Flame into the 21st Century". Bound in a puffy, navy blue, vinyl binder [removed from binder for conservation purposes]. Identified colour photographs of church members grouped by family, with listing of names and addreses of each member or adult couple. Minister is Rev. J.M. Laurenson; Summer ministers are R. Pearse, D. Jack, P. Hall, and D. Sargent. Television ministers are Bill, Ross, and Keith Beattie. Organist is Joan Wilson. File 3: Photographs, 1929-1954. - ph 46468: Black and white panoramic photograph, 1929 or 1930. It is a portrait of students of the Elora High School, posed outdoors on the school grounds. Leafy trees and houses along Chalmers Street (south of Church Street) visible in background. Inscribed on reverse, "Mrs K.A. Peden / (Katherine Ewing) / c/o Kathryn Broadfoot" and "Kathy Broadfoot". [ MC 71 ] - ph 46469: Black and white photograph, a portrait of members of the Beatty Brothers Limited Quarter Century Club, 19 November 1954. It depicts male employees of Beatty Brothers Limited, who had worked at the company for twenty-five years, along with their wives. Wives are seated in chairs in a row with their husbands standing behind them. Identified on reverse in black ink as "New Members / Quarter Century Club at Fergus / Fri Nov. 19/54". Inscribed on reverse in blue ink, "Bill Findlay x / Carl Miller & wife / Jim Procter & wife / Alec MacKenzie & wife / Griffin & wife / McLeland & wife / Millan Jamieson & wife / Alf Richardson".
