Date |
1892-2001 |
Description |
Six colour photographs of the painting entitled "Study Saint Ives, Cornwall", [England], signed in the lower right corner "F. McGillivray Knowles, 1892". Also four prints showing a detail of the signature. Painting depicts a man pulling a cart on the beach at St. Ives, with people at four moored boats behind him. Buildings along hilly coast visible in the background. Farquhar McGillivray Knowles (1860-1932) was born in Elora, Ontario, where his father, William, worked as a cabinet maker and later ran a hardware store. Upon becoming an artist, McGillivray Knowles decided drop the "Farquhar" and use his middle name. It was possibly around that time that he began telling people that he was born in New York State and had immigrated to Canada in 1863. In actuality he was living with his parents and siblings in Elora in 1861, at which time his parents listed him on the census as having been born in Canada West (Ontario). In the Elora census of 1871 they provided the same birth information. [An Art Gallery of Ontario exhibit catalogue lists him born in Syracuse, New York on 22 May 1860. The Elora Observer newspaper of 08 June 1860 reported that Mrs. William Knowles had given birth to a son who was born "in Elora" on 22 May 1860. Leaving Elora, he went on to study painting at Toronto's Notman Studios, and in Philadelphia and New York. In 1885 he married Ada Martha Cullen in Hamilton, but she died a couple of years later. In 1890 he married artist Elizabeth Beach. He spent 1891-1896 studying, painting and exhibiting in England and France. After returning to Canada in 1896 he taught in Toronto and Whitby. With Elizabeth, they ran a successful studio in Toronto. He moved to New York in 1920, and returned to Toronto in 1928. Elizabeth died that year, and in 1931 he remarried. |
